When I try and run the conversion I get a message saying...
"The table prefix needs to be the one used by the software you are converting from.
» Specified table prefix was phpbb_."
I'm positive that phpbb_ is the correct prefix for my forum. What is the problem, and where in my cpanel can I find out the table prefix?
Also, will running this conversion delete my old board?
I had the opposite problem, it wanted a prefix other than the one used in my 2.0 board. phpbb_ was the one I would have chosen, but it would not let me. The conversion will not delete or harm your 2.0 board, I tried the conversion 8 times today and was always able to get back to my 2.0 board at the end of the disasters.
Right. It says what I have there...phpbb_. My phpbb2's config.php file is also in my phpbb3 root folder. Could this be the problem? I had to do that to get the install to work.

That would be impossible, considering you need a working phpbb2 and a working phpbb3.
They both cannot be using the same config.php (or index.php or any of the other files)
You would think that, but it didn't fill it. It just gave me this error:
Could not connect to the database, see error message below.
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (46)
I did a search for this error in this forum and the person said to fix it you have to copy over your config.php file so that is what I did and it got pass that error just to give me the Fatal one.
Why would you copy over a phpbb2 file to install phpbb3?
That means the database info you were entering in the install page was wrong. You need to delete the config.php and replace it with the empty one, so you can install.
