 phpBB offline

Ok, I've got a complete beginners question.

Can you setup and mess around with phpBB offline?

I'm just getting started in web design and don't actually have a website yet. I want to make a website that my friends and I can chat, put up photos, etc and I want to use a forum. However, as I don't have a website yet, I wouldn't mind messing around with this forum program before I pay for a website and attemp to install.

Is this possible? I've found a program called phpdev. Can I install this and then use phpBB offline?

Please help!! I'm a complete novice and in desperate need of some guidance. :D

you have to turn your computer into a web server by installing all the web server software, if you just want to play around with phpbb for a while, then just go to one of the thousands of free phpbb sites and sign up for one of those boards. this will give you a feel for it and when you are ready for the real thing, you can get a real hosting account and go for it.

Thanks for the help Robert.

I really wanted to mess around with running the forum rather than using one but I think it'll be simpler if I just dive in the deep end and get myself a some web space.

Hi atyeo.

What Lumpy Burgertushie may have meant is that you can have a fully functioning forum that is provided by another host but you get adverts on it.

If you want to do it all yourself you need a host with php, an mysql installed.

All the best

Oh, OK. Thanks. I had missed that but that makes more sense now.

Cheers for the replies

yeah, you will have the ads and you also will have no control over the board other than what is in the admin panel

in other words, you can't install any MODs , you cant install any smilies, any styles, etc. etc. you can't even change the logo unless the owner has installed that MOD to let you.

My feeling is , that if you are serious about a board, then get a web hosting account and install it. you can get a good hosting account including a domain name for less than $50 US a year. dealing with the free ones is just not worth it in my opinion.
