Global forum setings

Post by JayM123 »

In addition to per-forum configuration settings add a global forum configuration page to the ACP such that forum changes that you want to be system-wide, such as adding a link to your forum rules for example, would only have to be done once rather than over and over in each and every forum's and subforum's settings. Having to do so makes a simple task rather tedious, and it's easy to accidentally miss a forum. The settings for individual forums should override the global settings so individual boards can still be configured differently if desired. The global config page would be used for settings that you wish all forums to have in common.

As I understand it, you mean the following: Let the settings of many forums and sub-forums on the site be changed in one place rather than individually. I guess you are not talking about permissions here.

I think it might. For example, the Quick Reply feature is also available in individual forum settings, adn for one-time activation in the entire forum. This can be done for many similar settings.

Some of those setting would certainly be nice if they were set globally. Expanding on the rules example what would be nice is rename it "Forum header". Allow for custom title to replace "rules" heading if you wanted to add something else besides rules.

I like the concept and having just had a look at the options I would say that about 75% could be set as global.

Where I think that there could be issues is with what is going to override what.

With a new board it would be fairly simple when starting off - set all the global options then customise individual fora when creating them. But what happens later down the road? You have several (or perhaps many) customised fora but you want to set a global option. Under the current suggestion individual fora customisations will override the global so there would need to be a mechanism for the global to override the customised options - something similar to user styles.

It could mean that you are achieving anything if you have to go through all the fora removing custom settings in order to allow the global setting to take effect.

You could just have a page that will apply settings globally. e.g you would open it up and nothing is selected. Only what you add or edit would be applied on clicking update button.

edit: With checkbox to override conflicting settings.

There may even be a section in this general setting page such as exclude these forums, apply only to these forums. This makes things much easier.
