Widget system (as seen on Invision Community)

Post by aloalo »

I would love to see Widget system on phpBB. Customizable widgets (place, size, css, title etc.) and front-end administrator widget editor.

You mentioned Invision Community, but there are people who do not know anything about Invision.
Explain more about your idea.

Of course.

Just like SiteMaker extension. This extension is enough but I would like to see this as built-in feature.

At the front-end, administrators would have an 'editor' that allowes them to place widgets (recent posts/topics, online members, staff team, statistics, custom HTML block, birthday list etc.) on their forum.

I will place images from SiteMaker as an example:

I don't think that it is needed in vanilla/core phpBB + just like on the screen above, it can be achieved with extensions (that's the purpose of extensions).

Definitely not a core requirement - although if I am not mistaken (which I quite often am) some of that functionality may be possible with Chameleon

I now no longer support any of my extensions but they will start to become available here

As much as i remember.. with Chameleon one may switch light/dark mode, search CP modules + creating/editing styles should be a lot easier. Maybe there is more, but not enough info about it.

There is a reason to have it in core tho: Extensions get abandoned at times, and sometimes they get no replacement.
Majority of forums on the internet have widgets, so I would imagine they are desired by most users

Same can be said about any project.

I do not follow other forum systems, so can't comment about that widget part. As much as i have seen.. most of them use extensions.
One thing is for sure.. no system should be bloated in vanilla state.. For that.. we have extensions/plugins/blocks/widgets that can be integrated.

One thing to add.. Some things would be solved with new style system.
