If a post will be deleted inside of a topic, no user can see anymore, there was a post and that can be confusing for all users, they read the topic.
My proposal is to replace the deleted post with a message "on this place was a post, that was deleted" in any case, a user or a moderator have deleted a post.
The principle of the idea is OK but the message to be displayed will probably be subject to (a lot of) discussion.
On an old board of mine I had 4 canned messages prepared for the main situations in which the contents of a post needed to be overwritten but there are always cases where the formulation just doesn't cover it exactly as one would like.
Is it necessary? not at all (personal opinion)
I'ld consider this a nice to have, but far from essential, however ATM I'll refrain from voting (it would be a NO).
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

A deleted message is not a trivial act, either because the message was off topic, or yet another abusive message from a member.
In the first case, it suffices to notify the editor of the deletion of his message, explaining the reason.
In the second case it is a safe bet that the abusive editor has already been warned so there is no need to waste time explaining the reason for the deletion of his message.
As already mentioned this modification must be done via an extension and not natively in the phpBB code, I vote NO

I agree with the others who have replied. Such functionality would be better off as an extension as opposed to in the core code. Not to mention that you can just edit member's post with a "redacted by moderator" message.
You can also edit the permissions to deny registered users the ability to self-delete their own posts, just like the current setup is on this site. If they want to "delete" it, tell them to edit it and replace the contents with their own redacted message.
I also vote no.

I agree that this should be an extension. If there are multiple adjacent deleted messages, I'd want it to say how many were deleted as well instead of the deletion notice being repeated.
Since "extension" seems to be the consensus, is there a proposed name?
Having thought about the options, if this were to be a feature, it shouldn't be automatic at all : hence vote cast (a NO)
