Language Editor

Post by Louis7777 »

How about a language editor in ACP that looks like this:

(The screenshot is taken from an opencart backend.)

The idea is to provide a tool to assist users in their effort to build a multilingual site or to modify their english frontend and/or backend without directly messing with language files.

There is already a language editor like that.
You will ultimately have to deal with files though.

Once phpBB languages are made I doubt they'd need to be edited much but I suppose it could encourage a few more translations (how many languages are already done?) if there was an export feature. *shrug*

I'd liked to vote for this idea, but can't.

I didn't see such editor, like Brf wrote.

The translated german language files have some errors and some sentences are complicated somehow, because they seem to be performed with google translate and are not really formed liked germans speak. So it really would be useful to change something within phpBB instead of using external programs.

Go to ACP/System/Language_packs
In the list, click on the language name

Until now I thought there only can READY MADE language packs be installed and deleted and not can't be edited.

But you are right. After clicking the language name I can see and edit. But I have a problem to save that. I don't like so save it with FTP anywhere else, only saving directly in the language directory of the server, where the forum is installed, to use it there.

So I think that isn't so comfortable like it should and could be.

As I'm using the phpbb framework also for websites I developed a language copy script.
It uses a master language pack and copies the language variable of a second language pack in new files named the same as the master.
All pack should be in the store folder.

Maybe you can use it.

Why this was removed after 3.0?
Also is there a chance this is coming back?

Are you talking about the language editor or the (ACP) style editor?

Talking about 3.0 functions like forumhulp extension is almost. It's useful, and should be inside core.

I agree, but only (in my opinion) relevant for translators, so

I would disagree, better have it as a development tool and presented as a extension, like the skeleton extension or the template event extension
