The problem with the blank page is the def_tree.php file erasing information when someone posts in a forum the only solution I have seen so far is to upgrade the category heirarchy mod to the most recent version 2.1

Yep that was the problem - I used the upgrade file for step 1 and missed the change in the constants.php. It seems to be working well now.
