EDIT: aha, it appears that for some reason the command "unzip -o phpbbupdate.zip" failed to overwrite various php files.

thats probably the problem ;-)

it definitely helps. i'm not sure about others, but over at vampteam.com, many of the spam accounts activate their account (image verification is enabled). i suppose modifying the account activation process would help.
