Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

I wonder how a 3D captcha (such as seen here) would stop the bots in their tracks. Generally, OCR technology works on scanning 2D text, even fuzzy and distorted (as faxes and photocopies often are) but not on scanning 3D text.

Re: Fight the spam registration bots!

With a text editor, search for "agreed", and replace it with your own choice of mixed case, or even something like "IAmInAgreement". This will not work with all versions of sed, but at least under FreeBSD you can accomplish it all with a single command executed from the forum's ...

Can I disallow specific user agents?

Is there a way to disallow "users" of a specific user agent? I keep getting fake registrations. My log shows that they come from a user agent marked "Forum Poster - fp.icontool.com". I took a look at the fp.icontool.com web site and it claims to be a tool for forum administrators...

Guest: Viewing private messages

Is it possible for a guest to view private messages? For days now, whenever I see who is on, there is a guest from 210.173.180.160, and it says "viewing private messages." To top it off, when clicking on that URL, it is unable to give me a domain. I did a whois on that IP and it belongs to...

Oh, so when it is not highlighted, it is not unbanned. I just assumed that if it is even listed, it will be unbanned.

Thanks! Another problem solved!

Thank you, Dave, but the problem is not whether I can ban all of *.ru (it is always the same domain, so I could just use that domain), but that I cannot ban anything without unbanning the previously banned IP range.

But that's exactly where the problem is. If I do that, the only way to ban is with unbanning the existing ban.

How do I ban without unbanning?

I would like to ban any new user with an email address of *.ru but I do not know how. When I go to the admin panel, ban control, it does not allow me to add a range of email addresses without also deleting the range of IP addresses that I am currently banning. That range is listed automatically unde...

Is there a way to ban a range of characters? That is everything that is above ASCII 127? I mean otherwise I would have to spell out every non-ASCII character explicitly, and there are some 128 of them.
