Inactivating PHPBB account

There should be a one-button way for a user to inactivate their account. I've read a few threads about this, and the usual response is "if an account is deleted, the deleted posts will screw up the flow of conversations." But, that seems to miss the point. There should be a way to abandon an account...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

There is absolutely no logical reason why a human spammer would be unable to sign up if a human who intends to participate normally can sign up. I got the impression from an earlier post that "brf" was saying to create Q&A questions specific to your group's audience. Example: for an online-gaming f...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

, simple mathematical word problems in the Q&A module seem impenetrable to bots. I liked your suggestion and recommended it earlier in this topic. I think it makes a lot of sense. ("Mary buys 4 candy bars, gives away one, and already has a case of 24 at home. How many candy bars does Mary have?"). ...

That's why there should also be a relatively short time-limit on any captchas. 30-60 seconds. If a captcha doesn't grow stale, it invites that kind of hand-off to a human.

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

I still get human spammers (really, nothing can realistically stop that), A proper Q&A question might stop the human spammers, as I am trying to explain. I have had no human spammers either. Are you emphasizing proprietary questions? Like, let's say I have a web forum catering to city planners. I w...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

Spam making false or deceptive claims is illegal -- at least here in the US. Spam for legitimate, legal products is usually legal. It seems like spam could be considered a violation of hacking and DCMA laws in the US. My reasoning: If I put in my ToS that the user agrees not to post off-topic nor c...

Re: ProSilver or SubSilver2 (the future?)

The "subSilver2" style is likely to be dropped at some point in the future, though we are still in discussion as to what to do with it. ;) Thanks. That makes me nervous because browser support for CSS still seems touchy. I've tried to change a few things in prosilver. It looks good in FF, but destr...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

There are already DNSBLs and projects such as StopForumSpam that do this. ;) I like StopForumSpam because admins are able to submit spam data, unlike many other DNSBLs. Does DNSBL mean to blacklist an IP address? The reason I ask is, I noticed in the ACP->Server Conf.->Security settings it has an o...

ProSilver or SubSilver2 (the future?)

Does ProSilver deprecate SubSilver2? Or, is it expected to? The reason I ask: I want to make a lot of modifications. I find ProSilver's style-driven layout to be a bit delicate and too time-consuming. (ProSilver is beautiful. But, for my requirements, imperfect browser support for CSS makes it a cha...

This is also supported by XRumer now I hear: *link removed* Hi. I need to crack captcha. Do you provide a captcha decoders? DeCaptcher CAPTCHA solving is processed by humans. So the accuracy is much better than an automated captcha solver ones. That's why I think there's no way to avoid defining me...

Re: "Last edited" doesn't count until a reason is provided?

This is happening because you are a moderator on that forum. When moderators edit a message, the count only goes up if they provide a reason, permitting you to do "invisible" fixing of messages. Thanks. I understand now. I didn't realize I could (as a moderator) edit other people's posts. (I just a...

"Last edited" doesn't count until a reason is provided?

I'm using 3.0.6. Is this a bug? When I edit a post, the viewtpoic list doesn't show the "last edited ..., edited n times" message. However, if I edit it and specify a "reason," then it displays the message (plus the "Reason" line below.). The "n times" shows 1 (not 2). Next, I can edit the post a th...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

I'd use the math questions, but many of my members don't understand English very well so it would have to be a simple 2x4 sort of thing otherwise they might get confused. I don't know what alternative methods there are. The "crazy maths" captcha mntioned in the first post can represent simple math....

Re: Problem displaying subforums :-(

I posted about this a couple weeks ago. What you describe is just the way PHPBB works. When you choose the option (when creating a forum) to display a subforum on parent forum legends, it displays on all parent forums which have the option to display subforums. I plan to workaround this by customizi...
