Porting PhPBB to node.js

I have been using PhPBB for a couple of years now, and my latest implementation of it took so much work to get it to run like a modern website that it makes me wonder if PhPBB has hit the end of the line. The web is moving on, and PhPBB is staying left behind. I did manage to create an HTML5 templat...

Re: [DEV] Open Social

Why don't you use a different name for your mod. Open Social is the name of the standard developed in conjunction with Google, OpenSocial.org. If anything, it would be great to develop a mod for PhPBB that makes it compliant with the OpenSocial standards. That way, any app implemented for OpenSocial...

Re: Why does $user->data['is_bot'] not work?

Thank you stevemaury for the link, it was what I was looking for, it was helpful. I am sure it will be of help to support other PhPBB3 users as well who would like to test their board and see what BOTs see.

Re: Why does $user->data['is_bot'] not work?

In case you are not aware of this, Google results are not the same for everyone. The first hit I get on Google is Wikipedia's page on how to write a BOT, plus all the other hits are similar, all about how to code up a bot. The video result suggested at the bottom was just amusing, which is why I pos...

Re: Why does $user->data['is_bot'] not work?

No seriously? No offense, but this isn't a very helpful comment. Of course I can Google "How to be a bot", and If I had found useful results doing that, I wouldn't be asking here. I always exhaust whatever resources I have at my disposal (programming documentation - PhPBB APIs seem to be a...

Re: Why does $user->data['is_bot'] not work?

I figured that out from looking at my logs, my errors from bot visits went away.

But it would be nice for debugging purposes to be able to browse my board as a bot. What's the best way to do this?

Why does $user->data['is_bot'] not work?

I am writing an external PhPBB news page for my home page, and I discovered that the variable $user->data['is_bot'] actually doesn't get filled even after the page user initialization, i.e. // Start session management $user->session_begin(); $auth->acl($user->data); $user->setup(); Is this some sort...

Re: Programatically check if user is a spider/crawler

This doesn't work at all in PhPBB3. I think it's something that used to work in a previous version. I've literally tried to implement this on an external page so I can use a different template for a bot. And guess what? This variable doesn't get set. USER_TYPE = 2 does get set, and that's all you ge...

Re: PhPBB and Lunarpages.com

I just had a discussion with their support, they've moved all their shared hosting to cloud servers, and basically, they are restricting memory usage to 2% on shared accounts. Imagine sharing an account on a shared hosted server which itself is sharing with other shared hosting servers. This pretty ...

PhPBB and Lunarpages.com

One word of advice to anyone running PhPBB: never, ever sign up for Lunarpages.com hosting services. Ever since I installed PhPBB, Lunarpages constantly complained that my account was using too many resources. then, two days ago, they went ahead and restricted the memory usage on my account. I was g...

Caching external pages

I moved to PhPBB a while back but have been trying to pull my old archives into the forum. For now, I went ahead and created an archive.php (with a corresponding template) that essentially pulls in the posts that are in text format, and displays them inside the PhPBB environment. There are some dyna...

Re: Critical bug with exceed login attempts

What I am suggesting that it should clear when the person activates their password, not after the user logs in. If I was the end user, and I just went through the trouble to activate my password, and then it would ask me for a Capcha, I would be frustrated to say the least.

Re: Critical bug with exceed login attempts

I can see that it's "as designed", I suppose this is why I use PhPBB as opposed to other platforms. The security is superior. But it's really causing headaches for my end users. There's got to be a more user friendly way to do this. Once a user has activated his password, he should get log...

Critical bug with exceed login attempts

When I user tries to login and fails several times in a row, the system comes up with a message about exceeding the login attempts and makes the user solve a CAPCHA. All is good, except that when in this mode, if the user then tries to reset their password, and then uses the news password to login, ...
