Re: SEF/SEO URLs

I only fully read the first and last page of this thread -- but I still got the general idea of the debate being had. [...] I prefer Coke to Pepsi. This is a weak analogy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki.php?page_id=12345). Just kidding, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weak_analogy. There are no objectiv...

Yes. RESTful URLs. This topic would have a URL of phpbb.com/phpbb-discussion/sef-seo-urls. Generally, example.com/forum-title/thread-title[--uniquifier].

HUMAN-friendly URLs

viewtopic.php?f=64&p=13015808 topic/seo-urls-7 It's not all or nothing, you can compromise. Is that supposed to be "pretty" or 'friendly"? that just really makes my point. from a SEO standpoint, none of this matters. We don't care about SEO. These URLs are human -friendly. from a user standpoint, t...

Re: Unique URLs

You still need to tuck in a direct identifier to the topic somewhere to get around clashes (no matter how/where you "hide" this) . You can't rely on only the topic title or whatever slug you plan to use. ID: 1, Title: Unique, URL: Thread-Unique ID: 2, Title: Unique 3, URL: Thread-Unique-3 ID: 3, Ti...

Knowing what one is talking about

I won't pretend to understand what all of that means. I have a friend who says he won't vote, because he isn't well-informed enough about politics to make a good decision. Abstaining, when understanding is lacking, is a perfectly reasonable choice. however, what I do know is that it means nothing t...

Re: SEF/SEO URLs

phpbb has not been left behind at all. it is on the cutting edge of what is going on in bulletin board software. It would be nice to support your assertions with evidence and arguments, as I did . it is the most popular and most used software of it's kind in the world. If you've been posted online ...

Re: What should SEO URLs/ Pretty URLs look like?

The purpose of Area51 is for discussion of future versions of phpBB, including new features. It by no means is just for developers. BTW, If we want people to be able to fluidly move between phpBB forums and Area 51, why does Area 51 require a separate account? :) It would seem that we have gone out...

Replies to lame counter-arguments

simply not gonna happen I bet. none of that is really a big deal. people are moving away from typing in urls way more than they are moving towards it. even though many of your examples are true, technology will advance to the point where is won't be necessary to do any of that. I don't know exactly...

Clean URLs

It's been half a year since the previous post here, and I feel we could use some fresh thought on CleanURLs . First of all, I agree that to search engines, clean (human-friendly) URLs may not matter at all. But I think they matter a lot to humans, and here are the reasons I believe so: 1. To selecti...

Re: What's the current status/thought on threading?

I think the appropriateness of threaded view depends on whether topics stay on topic. That is something I would agree with. Now, it's interesting to see how often forum conversations do stay on topic. In the absence of studies on this, um, topic, I would say from my experience with frequenting prob...

Re: What's the current status/thought on threading?

We have modern alternatives nowadays, with AJAX (which is actually 10+ years old and still not adopted by phpBB ). What do you mean? Where would AJAX be suitable for use within phpBB? You act as if everything should be AJAX. But AJAX and hash-bangs do have their problems . ;) I think he meant that ...

Re: What's the current status/thought on threading?

I know this is off-topic, but if someone could please explain to me [why] hash-bangs are used instead of hash [...] What a perfect use for a threaded view! I swear I didn't bribe Techie-Micheal, nor Phil, nor /a3 above. Since I'm not particularly interested in this branch of the conversation, a thr...

Re: What's the current status/thought on threading?

I did not check out your examples but the type of "threaded" discussion we are talking about here is the old style of indent, indent, indent ad nauseum until you have to scroll sideways for days to see the next post title. That was definitely a problem, especially with e-mail when repeated '>' quot...

Re: What's the current status/thought on threading?

I find this strange. the whole point of the way phpbb was designed ( and most other current bulletin board software ) was to get away from that old fashioned, mailing list type of look. I really don't want to hijack the topic. I've worked as a User Experience Designer for Y! and there are many logi...
