its not possible .htpassword is above the php stack. before php can even execute .htpassword will. meaning, even if you had these users/pass's in .htpassword, its going to prompt people before they ever get to phpbb. .htpassword doesn't create any type of session or cookie that can be used with php ...

yes, this is all done with groups and permisisons. its actually very easy. it's all there in the admin section.

great thread. i'm going to go about this my own way with a bit of hackery and custom scripting with bans from custom tables i setup. however - i think the biggest problem lays in the visual confirmation coding. Gtk and GDlib can both output some crazy images to constru things and i believe the phpbb...

the only time you will be prompted to download an actual php file is if:

a.) you don't have php
b.) mime types are configured incorrectly in the apache server (the isp would have noticed within hours)

you should be editing those in the style/theme your using. they appear as i've customized all my stuff from time to time. you are probably just putting things in the wrong place. i would say i could help but i think when it comes time to editing code you need someone who actually knows what they are...

your forums topic has nothing to do with it and the software version number has everything to do with it.

i've been removing the version from the software since around 2002. (as scanners look for 2.x.x etc)
