Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

Robert,

You are totally incorrect because I never made any of the points in your arguments. The issues you are discussing were invented by your followers and then attributed to me.

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

are you saying that what we are telling you about the difference between a tld ( domain ) and a IP address is wrong? I am not saying anything of the sort; people are just making up things; most people contributing are much more knowledgeable about phpBB than I am; I am an economist by training; but...

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

But IP addresses do not have .ru, or any other tld, in them - there is no correlation between IP addresses and top level domains. You can have any tld hosted on any IP address. If *.ru can be banned in Ban Email utility, it should also be able to be carried over to the Ban IPs utility (also look at...

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

Unfortunately, most of you responding to me have your fingers in your ears. How can I make it clear that banning IPs is working for me: It has significantly reduce the amount of malicious traffic to my forum and site. If you I could get phpBB to enhance the Ban IPs utility to accept entries like *.r...

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

No need for that - just empty the ban table or delete the bad entry from the ban table and everything is fine again ...

Next time, ask first before your rollback your board to a old state ...
I did ask, but this info is good to know.

Thanks.

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

You'll also eventually hit the PHP parsers memory limit, and then you'll be met with a blank white page when trying to go to the IP ban page. Yes, this has happened to me when I tried to ban all Russian IPs starting with 5. It is surprising to me that you are aware of this problem and have done not...

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

and your question about banning *.ru in the IP banning section; .ru is a domain it is not an IP. you can't put a domain in the IP banning section, only IPs.
just like you can't put IPs in the domain or email banning section.
Are you sure about that, you should double-check to make sure.

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

Yeah, I know that's why I also ban these IPs in my site's cPanel. However, you must be aware that it is phpBB that attracts most of the malicious traffic to a site. My site is a very low traffic site, how do these scumbags find out about a site like mine. Is there a list of phpBB site that these peo...

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

I do not have a spam problem.

Banning IPs may be a waste of time for you but it has significant reduce the malicious traffic to my web site.

Re: Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

Thanks for your answer, however I meant exactly what I wrote.

I am only interested in how *.ru would behave in the Ban IPs Form.

Yes I know IP are numbers but if for example you entered microsoft.com in the Ban IPs Form, it will be converted to and IP address.

Entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form

Greetings:

What does entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form do?

Does entering *.ru in the Ban IPs Form remain a single entry or does it populate the Form with all permutations of *.ru?

Will *.ru ban all IPs ending with .ru?

Does entering *.ru cause any memory or storage issue for phpBB?

Thanks

Re: Denying all IPs from a Specified Country

Ok, when I get a chance I will do a SiteLock scan and if the problems are still present in 3.2.3, I will send along the results to you.

In the meantime anyone still using 3.2.2 and can do a SiteLock scan please pass along the results to stevemaury in a post here.

Re: Denying all IPs from a Specified Country

I am not into playing word games with you.

As mentioned above SiteLock scans showed up a number of vulnerabilities with phpBB; these were especially bad in 3.2.2. I have not look at the scans for 3.2.3 as yet.
