Re: hammered by newly registered members

Here is what worked for me:- 1) Disable registration 2) Clear inactive users 3) change questions (see my earlier posts for examples - don't use these though, use similar unique ones) 4) Ban Ukranian hosts in my .htaccess file (if you don't know how to do this then best leave it) 5) Ban known spambot...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

After taking a long hard look at my server logs and looking at my webalizer stats, at a guess around 75% of my spammers are using the host steephost.net. This host already is in the news see here:- http://www.technologyreview.com/news/418661/tracking-criminal-data-centers/ So, I blocked it in my .ht...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

Possibly but this new xrumer is supposed to be very, very good at getting past many anti-spam systems. It looks like its using a Q & A database loaded from their server which is constantly updated by humans paid to do so. Without seeing xrumer for myself I can't confirm but I'm just going on what I f...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

Having questions such as enter the second, seventh and eighth character from this code $H8ff2&lyZ works fine. I'm still being attacked by xrumer (can see it in the server logs and guests on "who's Online") but none have managed to post or register since I changed my questions. As someone pointed out...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

My spam registrations have stopped but the server CPU usage is consistentley over 75% usage so much so my host has placed limitations of resources allocated to my site. I did some investigation and its caused by the site being hammered by bots from multiple IP addresses at the same time all are fail...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

any thoughts or examples of Q&A that would defeat Xrumor? My questions are all something along the lines of "enter the first, third and seventh character from this code g7$nA67p." Seems to work. My next problem is it's using up my server bandwidth as I can see them trying to post as guest users and...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

Yeah, there was a post several hours before the attack happened saying "where can I download Xrumer... etc" which I ignored and locked the thread. Went to bed and in the morning forum was spammed. Seems like this was a test for this new version of xrumer or something. As Kevin Clarke said, I am conf...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

Just an update - still no spam but there is still spambot activity. If I go to who's online there are loads of guests saying replying to topic <Topic name> and posting to <forum name> but nothing is actually posted. Deactivated members list is still empty - newly registered but email addy not confir...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

I have four questions..... As I understand it, more questions reduces security as the user only needs to answer one of them. Am I wrong? Yes, the user only has to answer one of them. However the question is random and it could be any one (in my case, four) that the user is presented with. I think t...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

Investigated this even more, i found references to lists with more than 5 million text-captchas for xrumer to target phpbb, so this spamrun will last a very long time and many q&a won't work anymore. Time for something new... btw: for the devs/mods meaning that guest-posting might be an answer: htt...

Re: hammered by newly registered members

Just as an experiment, try reducing registration attempts from the default 5 to 3 and have four Q&A rather than just one. Not sure if it was this that fixed it or the questions themselves which I changed. Forum been spam free for 3 hours now.

Re: hammered by newly registered members

Same happened to me last night, spent 2 hours cleaning up the forum. I changed the registration attempts setting from 5 to 3 and changed my Q&A questions (I have four) and it seems to have stopped. I have noticed an abnormal amount of people online though (15 guests and 2 registered) when there is u...

Conversion from Snitz 3.4.07 to PHPBB 3.0.10 Successful

I had a hard time getting to grips with UNIX and MYSQL. I have a ASP based Snitz forum running on Windows Server 2003 with an access database. After spending 8 hours! messing about I managed to get it working so I thought I'd share what I did with others here as I found some stuff here useful but ha...
