Re: how secure is the phpbb system?

phpbb2 was pretty easily hacked at one point.

it happened to a forum i now help to look after several times.

phpbb3 has always seemed much more secure. i don't see conversations about hacked phpbb3 boards.

Re: When will phpBB have a Great Visual Upgrade?

I would have preferred it if you were going to give me a standard line, that it had been one advising me how / where I could log the idea and present it to the team. Go to phpBB Ideas (when it's back up) or write an RFC at Area 51 (if you're more technical). Steve Thanks Steve, appreciated. I'll ha...

Re: When will phpBB have a Great Visual Upgrade?

I do believe there is a limit to what you can do and still maintain the idea behind phpbb of being a basic bulletin board. If you want a blog, install a blog etc. If you want a portal, install a portal, etc. being able to integrate phpbb with other types of software is coming along and will get eas...

Re: When will phpBB have a Great Visual Upgrade?

I know it's sort of a cop-out but we could have something like that as well or better if we had developers full time, which would mean we would have to pay them, which would mean phpBB would no longer be free. In any case I think that kind of control on the XenForo side probably means that for that...

Re: When will phpBB have a Great Visual Upgrade?

Perception is opinion, I agree, Robert. And we all have those. But when you're making software, that perception is part of the game.. and you have to manage them. See my last reply to David as to how I think this issue can be completely & neatly resolved to the satisfaction of all, by a new admin fu...

Re: When will phpBB have a Great Visual Upgrade?

Now if you told me that vBulletin or SMF, et. al changed their site theme every year then that's a different story. XenForo largely gets around this by having an awesome style themer in the Admin area. You can create a new colour palette with a slider, and apply it to your forum instantly. It's exc...

Re: When will phpBB have a Great Visual Upgrade?

there's no way you can compare this site, powered by phpBB, to WordPress, which is not nearly as complex. Hmm, I'm not convinced about that, David. Forums support one post-type - forum posts (well, and polls). Wordpress supports pages and posts, but multiple post-types within post. It also has a ve...

Re: When will phpBB have a Great Visual Upgrade?

you do realize that the xenforo default style is very blue? if you want white space just edit the included prosilver style or look at some of the other ones that are in development. many of them and many others will be released soon so you should have a lot to choose from. luck, robert There is a p...

Re: phpBB.com Website Feedback

I'm still using 3.0.12 but have just re-jigged my style to be responsive, 'borrowing' ideas from the 3.1 style and Artodia. The first time I enabled it I had similar comments from my iPad users but after I replaced <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width" /> with <meta name="viewport" con...

iPad / Tablet layout

I find the new version of the phpbb website pretty horrible to look at on an iPad. The navigation is now tucked away, unhelpfully, behind a mobile-style pop-out menu - good design for phones but not so good for tablets, where users have a full-width device in their hands. So the site is now harder t...

Re: Discuss: phpBB 3.1.0-RC1 released

So basically you're saying that phpBB should cover for all the wrong things that people have been taught and all the poor hosting solutions with bad advice and bad practice, instead of that those people follow a simple step-by-step guide on how to copy files from location A to location B. IMO, if p...

Re: Activate automatic bumping

You might want to also check each forums' 'Default Topic List Order' in Forum Settings, if it is affecting all users. There is no such setting. Yes, sorry, I apologise for that. I forgot that this setting comes from the 'Forum Sort Order' mod, not standard phpBB. Although, the OP seems to be (I cou...

Re: Forum Engagement: Open or Closed Forum?

Amigo, The numbers I have included in my opening post are correct. They are down precisely since opening up the forum to guests last October, after 4 years previously of being consistent. it is nothing to do with any change in the interest of the subject material, which relates to a UK professional ...

Re: The hardest question of all... how do you get new users?

I have found that having a facebook login system for the phpbb board is very helpful for getting people to login. Does this keep them logged in to the board once they have logged in with it once? Also, can they still pick a forum username, or do they just go under their real (Facebook) name? Intere...
