The standard search field (sf) values are titleonly, firstpost, all and msgonly. When I run through the search.php sourcecode I come across titleonly, firstpost and all, however not msgonly. The search function appears to work correctly with msgonly as search field (sf), but why can I find no refere...

OK. In this case it is the number of matching records found for a search query. Where is the "number of matching records" defined and how is this value passed on?
