Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

If phpBB put in some SEO in a future release 99% of users would not even think twice about and just accept it and carry on as normal - the other 1% would spend hours arguing that it was not implemented [in their opinion] correctly. Maybe version 3.2 won't have perfect SEO, but it could be better th...

I wouldn't be surprised about a little bit of initial resistance, but the reaction here on phpBB.com goes far beyond that...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

@ the experts . If i'm on page 5000 of a google search and do " SEO " and it helps me get on page 4000 how does that help me ? If it doesnt get me on the first 2 pages it is a waste of time and effort . That isn't entirely how it works. A website doesn't rank for just one keyphrase. It sh...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question. Good, regular language anchor text is better than a URL with keywords in it, but a URL with keywords is better than a meaningless URL.

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

My point is that users shouldn't be so sloppy. By the way, do search engines look at the anchor text for SERP? If so, then putting good anchor text in should give SEO benefits, right? How would that compare with keywords in URLs? Software has to be designed around users' actual behavior, not the de...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

Because we don't want to pay some potentially charlatan SEO "expert"? Because we set it up for a small group and don't particularly care if "strangers" come? Why do you assume that everyone has the same requirements as you? It's okay if you just want to run a small forum, but ma...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

After following all of this topic I still cannot see what difference it makes to the average forum owner. Why settle for mediocrity? If a forum owner wants traffic and users, then maximizing rankings is beneficial. Moz just published a new blog about URL - http://moz.com/blog/15-seo-best-practices-...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

I think you're getting people's hopes up a bit too much, in all honesty. You make it seem like there's some sure fire way of appearing on the first page of search results when all one can do is set things up, cross your fingers, and wait and see, oftentimes not getting expected results. I don't mea...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

Most times I search for something I don't see a forum AT ALL on the first page be it a vBulletin, IPB, or whatever board (XenForo is supposedly very popular yet I haven't been on a single XenForo board...), unless I'm searching for something very specific. On many sites, most traffic comes from lon...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

seo is nearly completely needless for a maximum ranking Optimizing a site for maximum rankings is not required for maximum rankings? That is not a reasonable statement. :) The external links that Robert is taking about is one of the very reasons why clean URLs matter . Forum signatures aren't hugel...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

H1 is much less important than the other things mentioned, like clean URLs. In HTML 5 you can use as many as you want, but I would still make the top one unique. These kind of minor things can be customized in themes without much effort. People aren't going to avoid phpBB if it doesn't get the H1 el...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

This is only my personal opinion, but screw meta descriptions . Developers shouldn't waste their time on them as the website's users don't see them. Let Google make an even smarter algorithm to extract better descriptions. Meta-descriptions are still useful: Google does not always pick the best exc...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

Canonical URLs are part of the core. Just a tip: they aren't fully implemented. A URL like this won't have a canonical tag: /index.php?sid=42c0d182c5a358d8f7a16aa7cab41f78 (Side note: one shouldn't link to index.php files in general, because it's duplicate content. The home page canonical URL is / ...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

The issue is that individual posts are being indexed. These are fine (Up to a point - Missing meta desc etc), they have different titles and different content on each page, and also individual canonical tags: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=2288906 https://www.phpbb.com/com...

Re: PHPBB3 [3.1.2] worst forum for SEO URL that I saw in my life

Each paginated page should have a slightly different title. You can simply append "Page 3" to the title on page 3. We already do this, which is why I'm confused about the whole "duplicate content" comments. Each page is titled differently based on the page number. I'm not sure i...
