Re: Broken notification & search after user posts delete

Thanks. I did reset/resynchronize statists, post counts, dotted topics...cleared the cache...just checked the "post_visibility" field and I see values of 1 and values of 2...hmm. Also...had to take into account the posts that were soft deleted. Oh well enough of that.

Re: Broken notification & search after user posts delete

I have a similar problem on the forum I manage. I had a 500 error when deleting a user and their posts via the ACP--and that user had several thousand posts. What I think is happening is that the system fetches the post count for a given topic from the posts table, which obviously changes when posts...

Re: Allow users to hide a post/topic?

FWIW, what I do to "hide" a forum is to set up a user group such as "Opt Out ForumXYZ" and then set that user group's forum permissions to "No access" for "ForumXYZ". The user group is open for any user to join. No extension required. Hiding individual posts a...

Re: Blighted by Russian spammers (or spam bots)

I've had pretty good results using mathematics questions in the Q&A captcha, for example, "Enter the square root of ten to ten decimal places."

How can I block this type of request?

I've been getting a lot of this in my server logs:

[edited to remove SQL injection code]

Seems to be an attempt at SQL injection. Is there an effective way to block such requests in .htaccess without breaking forum functionality?

Re: Ignore a topic

Re: the request for an option to ignore an entire subforum...what I did on my forum was to set up open user groups, each of which is set for "No Access" for a specific subforum. Users can join any such open user group. For example, to set up an option to "ignore" the "Extens...

I do not recommend this.

Respectfully, what others have advised you about making your forum interesting and doing the work necessary to convince people to join your forum, is the best thing to do.

Re: Aliens, UFOs, and the paranormal

Used to be interested in it when I was a kid. Then I became interested in science and that was far better.

Re: [3.2] Fake User

You could use the Feed Post bot to retrieve and post content automatically. You would need to create a user account which you would then assign as the "Feed User ID". That would be a "fake user". You could create several user accounts and assign each to a separate RSS feed. https...

Re: Ignore a topic

FWIW, I've uploaded a ZIP file with incomplete code I had been working on to hide topics posted by foes. What I really wanted to do was to have a selection button for each topic in the viewforum view, so that the use could add the topic to a list, which I believe was how that older Hide Topics mod w...

Re: Ignore a topic

If this helps, a little thing I developed that hides posts by people on a user's "Foes" list. Definitely not the same as being able to ignore a topic--an option I'd like to have as well--just haven't the time to devote to trying to code it. https://github.com/jimdominic/phpbb-hide-foes Ple...

SQL injection question

I am seeing this type of thing in my server logs over the past few weeks. Any suggestions on how to block and/or prevent such attempts from succeeding appreciated. Most of these get a 403 in return, but some of them return a 200 code which concerns me. GET /search.php?search_id=%28SELECT%20%28CASE%2...

Thanks. I'll give that a try. I do prefer to have control over what's being delivered wherever possible.

Calls to s9e.github.io

I understand that the 3.2.x system uses the s9e URL formatter...what I don't understand and am I bit concerned about is that it requires a call to s9e.github.io to generate an iframe to do that. For example: <iframe data-s9e-mediaembed="twitter" allowfullscreen="" onload="va...

User posted base64 of malware

So a user who has a case of ransomware on their machine decided to post the email that infected their system, along with the base64 encoding of the payload. I deleted the post on the grounds that posting the base64 violated rules against posting malware and/or viruses. Was I being overzealous or was...
