Re: Why forum over Facebook?

- Much harder to share videos. It's actually easy. Either (a) allow users to upload video as an attachment and use inline embed. (b) Put video on Youtube. Include youtube link in post. Done - video displays in post. "a)" Yes, though impractical for many (most?) boards . . . the ones with big $$$ sp...

Re: Why forum over Facebook?

Oh, I don't know—I've seen some very good discussions on Facebook in some group pages. Outside of groups, yes, there are a whole lot of meal photos, pet pictures, "here's my kid", etc. Moderation can make a difference, but FB groups have moderators too.

User edit of URL's presented link text in new post?

In vBulletin, there's a integrated way for a user to have a URL in a post but use some user-provided text for the presented link. So it would look like this: Here is a pretend link user link text to nothing. where the user's URL would activate when clicking on "user link text". In vBulletin, a user ...

Re: +1, Like, or something similar

We, online forums, are battling Facebook and we need some kind of “like” feature. Users expect it these days and are disappointed if it’s not there.

And where we can, we need to do “it” (user experience) better than FB.

Why forum over Facebook?

I’ve started a phpBB forum. None exists for my topic. There’s a guy who runs clinics around North America and has a mailing list. I offered to trade him a banner ad in exchange for him sharing my forums with his mailing list. (I need to get members to operate a forum!) His question: What’s the point...

Re: Basing rank on date joined plus posting?

That should be "CANNOT be Googled" Google is a moving target . . . at the moment, my questions do not net a Google result that could be easily modified into the correct answer. (If that makes sense.) Google gets better and better at answering users' questions in the search bar every day, that's why...

Re: Basing rank on date joined plus posting?

David, I did wonder about that. Thanks.

I’ll either pull the extra questions or make up a new set (2-3) if a bot beats it/them.

Re: Basing rank on date joined plus posting?

Thanks, Steve. I’ve confirmed that the Auto Groups solution will work perfectly! Awesome. Sorry, that I wasn’t clear. I wrote several Q/A pairs, the “random” part is that phpBB seems to select rendomly from those when it poses a question on the registration screen. I tried to make the questions ones...

Re: Basing rank on date joined plus posting?

After the deadline for joining, set the rank post limit to 999999. Steve, there may be more to this solution that what we are thinking. As a test, I changed the rank from a minimum post of 1 to a minimum of 999 and the rank icon that had previously been appearing for a member stopped appearing. It ...

Re: Basing rank on date joined plus posting?

I'm using the text-based Q&A CAPTCHA option with several different Q/A sets that phpBB seems to pick from at random. (It's amazing how many of my users know the airspeed of a laden swallow . . . kidding!) So far, I have no spam. But I also don't have many users or posts yet. I think once I get a spa...

Re: Basing rank on date joined plus posting?

Hey, thanks, Steve! Bear with this newbie, if you don't mind. So, I: - uploaded an image into images/ranks/ directory; - created a new rank of "Founding Member"; - set the "Rank Image" to my custom GIF icon (100px X 27px); - set "Special Rank" to "No"; - set "Minimum posts" to 1. There's a member wh...

Basing rank on date joined plus posting?

Hi to all! I'm starting a new forum—I've pretty much got it all set up now—and I want to add a founding member "badge" icon (that I made up) that permanently displays if a member joins by a certain date -AND- makes a post. (Registering but only lurking doesn't count.) I'm assuming that this involves...

Re: [3.2][RC] Privacy Policy

[Edit] I got a verbose PHP error. I downloaded the extension files again today and re-uploaded them and now it's working. Dunno. Go figure. But I still have a—probably lame—question. When I click on the "Policies" link at the bottom of the forum, I get a new page with the header and footer of my for...
