I think the details element idea is an interesting one except the non support on IE? Wouldn't you have to use a polyfill then like details-polyfill?

Your first problem is that your using a token (like {NUMBER}) more than once and it cannot tell the difference.

So you need to number them by adding a number as the last character between the braces, e.g. {NUMBER1}, {NUMBER2}.

You could use this for any font awesome, be it star , calendar, etc, to display from 1 upto 5 symbols. You can choose all the same colour for all of them, some of them or none of them.
