Re: [2.0.x] Tweaks for large forums

Quite good summaring Dog Cow. Btw im curious what method of including cache'd data from file to variable is fastest: 1. ob_start(); require_once( 'cache/users.php'); $users = ob_get_contents(); ob_end_clean(); $total_users = $users; 2. $file = implode('', file('cache/users.php')); $total_users = $f...

Re: utf-8 support

File encoding only matters for non-english languages and only for the files in the language/ directory. File encoding matters for ALL languages, including English, and if not correct the mod will be rejected when it is submitted to the moddb. That's not true. :P I've always used ANSI for English en...

Re: utf8_unicode_ci vs utf8_bin

While Jelly is correct about it modifying comparisons, the reason why we want to modify comparisons is for sorting. utf8_bin just does an ordinal sort, this is useless for human beings. utf8_unicode_ci has knowledge of unicode sorting metrics which is much more people friendly.

Re: Bump function changes post time and resets edit restriction

There are several goals to consider: Accuracy - things like post time and topic time are accurate. That is, we do not betray correctness. Feature - we provide a useful feature, something that is useful and should be, by default, allowed. Performance - we are not wasteful of resources There are many ...

Re: [templating question] breaking out of loops using "BEGIN !"

That "BEGIN !z" thing is meaningless. How could you loop over a "not" variable? It is not meaningless, take a better look at template_compile::compile_tag_block What you want is equivalent to a break;, yes? EDIT: Sorry, the title confused me. Yes, the "!" is what you would want for getting "outside...

There are hosts where version_compare is a blocked function, ini_get is not a stretch at all ;)

Re: Creating a Table

(Late Reply, sorry)
I tried to make this as easy as possible for 3.2 because now the only way tables are messed with is dynamically, including at install time :)

Please give it a try whenever you find yourself with too much time, a big goal that 3.2 has is easier dev stuff across the board.

Re: Discuss: phpBB2's "Retirement" Announced

The design choices that went into phpBB2 means that even if the change itself is small, actually fixing it can take hours because the various tangled code paths need to be taken into account. From our end, phpBB2 is a less than perfect maintenance situation. We cannot simply deffer development of ph...

Re: [DEV] Smartfeed for phpBB 3

A good rule of thumb is that LEFT JOIN'd tables can only join with the last table in a FROM clause. MySQL reorders the query for you but this has problems in and of itself. More strict databases will just error out and force you to make the ambiguity resolved.

Re: postgresql vs mysql

Hi Maybe this will answer your question fully. Jim That article is out of date and highly inaccurate. If I were to pick one, I would pick PostgreSQL over MySQL because of how consistent it is and the superior way it handles Unicode However, PostgreSQL requires significant amounts of tuning before i...

Re: Question about Database Backups

Unless you explicitly requested for compression, then it will not compress the file (you would be able to see the additional filetype options in the ACP) However, the smaller filesize can be accounted for in the generation of the SQL file for MySQL databases. For MySQL backups, we take advantage of ...

Re: phpBB3 install, which collation type?

We force collation when appropriate. We use utf8_general_ci when we need to have unicode sorting on a column
