Fonts

Folks; Better Captcha has reduced the number of spammer registrations on my forums from 20-50/day to one last week, so as you might imagine I'm tickled to death with the mod. But... Once it was working, I started to add new fonts, and realized I was making it tough on the legitimate users to registe...

Re: Main Page Switch?

anything you put in the overall_header.tpl file will run everytime someone goes to a page, every page, etc. Yes, that's true as far as it goes. But switches can make that conditional; we routinely use switches to show things only if a user is logged in (or not logged in, a visitor), so it seemed re...

Re: Main Page Switch?

The easiest way would be to add it to your templates index_body.tpl file which only shows up on your index page. Hum...I have the other random/added stuff on the site called from overall_header.tpl (with a hard-link in each of the template directories I use), so I was hoping to use a switch there j...

Main Page Switch?

I'm pretty sure there's an easy way to do this, but searching has come up dry; I want to write a simple switch so that something happens (in this specific case, a sound is played) ONLY if the user is on the main page of the forum, nowhere else (since it would drive everyone bonkers). Is there a simp...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

You have made your position perfectly clear, yet I respectfully disagree. Since it's pretty obvious we're not going to change the other's mind, perhaps we should move on. re:logs - I wouldn't provide logs unless the request is written inside a ticket you opened. Ignore emails completely, the request...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

The bottom line is google and yahoo both warned a long time ago not to use SID's for guests. Saying its their problem doesn't solve the problem, thats a little like saying "I don't care if my content has horrid spelling, its yahoo's problem to know what I mean". No, it's more like saying, "My synta...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

I'm going to give a respectful personal opinion on the matter, please take it as such. Of course. I believe Yahoo! has their act together and banning/firewalling the bots is hurting only the site owner. I disagree, primarily because this has never been a problem before, and suddenly is now. Yahoo c...

I was patient, but this afternoon I had 203 different 74.6.0.0/16 IPs slurping the site. I've firewalled them off until they get their act together (and am letting them know via the trouble-ticket I have open).

Re: Yahoo Crawler

Well they did reply but I am afraid that the reply was not a great deal of use. I received the same form letter, but was able to "skip the needle" (lord, less than a quarter of the people here will get that reference) and achieve an escillation. If you are interested in more details, please drop me...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

You have numerous pages duplicated through pagination and I won't even get into search.php and the sort box. (*sigh*) What I do and do not have in my .htaccess file isn't an issue. That I described above scores of accesses on the SAME URL (not the same data,, the SAME URL) from the Slirp bots is al...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

Right, it is a symptom of the problem. <<rest deleted, including my comments>> I'm not going to argue with you; this is a serious issue, and we clearly have decided to deal with it in different ways. I'll try to get to Yahoo engineering, you try to get a feature request posted to fix a cosmetic iss...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

Just thought I'd mention I'm not having any problems but all my URL's are rewritten with htaccess. 1 page 1 URL I'd bet that has a whole lot less to do with anything than you removing the SID for Yahoo's crawler. Almost 180,000 accesses on a little over 7,000 posts can't be explained by a post bein...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

cpanel/IP deny manager and adding 74.6. has stopped them of course I'm thinking adding -A INPUT -s 74.6.0.0/16 -j DROP to iptables would work a bit more globally, as well as saving the PHP and apache processes...I'm holding off a few days yet...heck, I'm down to only forty-five of the beasties in t...

Re: Yahoo Crawler

If I get a response from them I will post it in here. Good luck with that; the only response I received was a form letter from "Search & Directory Support" telling me, "In a continuing effort to improve our index freshness and comprehensiveness we are bringing online additional crawler machines to ...
