Do you have FTP (file transfer protocol) to your website? For ranks, you can put images by going to Admin panel and User Admin and Ranks..

for avatars, you can enable them in your admin's configuration in the avatar section.. then u can configure them by enabling them and enabling avatar uploading and the size and dimensions...

I think what you mean is changing the permalinks.

Like http://www.yoursite.com/forums/profile.php?mode=edit

changing that to

http://www.yoursite.com/forums/editprofile.html or something.

That's in postnuke, and not in phpBB. i don't think there's a MOD for it.
