In Joomla an overrite could be make to change, add something in the code without edit the core files. That is a good way to keep files until an Update. In phpBB, we use extensions to do that. Have a look here: Released Extensions or Extensions in Dev Useful tip: Installing an Extension Thanks

The important thing to do is set a GOOD CAPTCHA. Whatever you do, DO NOT use any of the 'squiggly letter' CAPTCHAS that phpBB comes shipped with. Those were broken by BOT writers years and years ago.

You will need an extension for that.
I don’t think there is one for phpBB 3.2(might be wrong).

Try requesting one in the extension request forum.
