Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

I've changed over to Q&A also however I'm still inundated with spam registrations. Looks like a vulnerability may have been found in the registration process. I have to agree, since upgrading to 3.0.8 my forum is getting quite a few spam bot registrations. Using reCatchpa and 3.0.7-PL1 i had no...

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

I just took a look at your forum registration, the question it asked was too simplistic and gives the answer on the same page and indeed within the question. It is possible to script a bot to parse the words on a page and try them until it hits the jackpot. Ask what the quarterly magazine is called ...

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

Since I reset all the questions on Q&A and blocked Russian Federation and China I have had no more spambots getting through. However, checking the logs shows that the onslaught has not diminished much as there appears to be attempts from Israel and a number of what I can only assume are fake DNS...

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

I found users struggling with the GD images but spammers still getting through.
I completely redid my Q&A questions yesterday which seems to have stopped the spammers.
However it isn't conclusive as I also blocked Russian Federation and China at server level.

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

I changed all my questions yesterday. Looking in the apache logs there seems to be a concerted attempt going on. Last night I firewalled most of the Russian Federation on top of my Chinese blocking at the server level. I'll take a look at the logs this weekend and see what the results are. So far I'...

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

Thanks RMcGirr83, but as the bots were able to spot that there was a box to fill in it ended up not saving me any time since I would have to delete their inactive accounts anyway. I take their IP check where it is coming from. If I'm still suspicious I shove the username into google. A few hits on l...

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

I just finished upgrading to 3.0.8 after my botched attempt on the 3rd Jan. I've just fed in a fresh set of questions to the Q&A. If the bots continue to get through I shall have to conclude there is some kind of bypass of the CAPCHA. Feedback for Steve - the code is bog standard now I think. I ...

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

Travisher, unless you have modified it, you are not using the Q&A CAPTCHA built into phpBB. H'mm as far as I'm aware I had a mod on a previous version but that I had gone with a clean copy when I updated last time. I'll take a look at it again tonight, I need to do so anyway as its stuck betwee...

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

Sure Steve,
http://www.bodgers.org.uk

most of the recent attacks have been from Ukraine and Russia but then I ban the whole of China at server level.
I've also seen a number of what are probably human attempts from Vietnam which may just be an extension of China as far as the bots are concerned.

Re: Spam Bots Attacking! Please Help!

I've been running with Q&A for nearly a year and I have administrative activation. The questions I have are very specific to my niche interest group and can only be answered by careful reading of the site. In the last 3 weeks the number of attempted spam sign-ups has rocketed. Occam's razor says...

Active Topics not working as expected (3.0.5 to 3.0.7)

I just updated from 3.0.5 to 3.0.7-PL1 My users report that now only my warnings about maintenance show up in the Active Topics list. Anyone got any ideas as to why? Both of these are global announcements - the only ones that are global I think. As a number of my users just go to the active topics t...

Thanks =TheOne= I think for the moment I shall try the VIP MOD to free up the time to work out the next spam beating strategy. One thing I noted about the email address posted by one spam bot, the email with the username and password bounced back from a different address to that in the page. This me...

Visual confirmation bypassed by spam robots.

I'm currently running 2.0.20. I have a MOD installed that prevents new registrants putting web sites in their profile and adds them to the ban list of they try returning a form with a web site in it. I have the Visual Confirmation turned on and account activation set to Administrator. I have a MOD i...

SQL error: Unknown column 'user_login_tries' in 'field list'

I've tried running the update_to_latest.php. After copying 2.0.20 files to my .18 board The first time it ran, it gave several errors but said it was probably all right. I removed the contrib and install directories and tried to log in only to get the same error 1054 error reported above and elsewhe...
