Re: Forum has chugged along for years-Now error when users try to log in.

Did you run a repair routine on the database? Especially if you're running close to max server resources, you might have errors creep in.

Re: Correct Way to Place Google AdSense Code in phpBB 3.2.7

There is a potential issue with this. AdSense requires that ads only appear on pages with content. The intermediate page you see when you submit a post ("your post was submitted successfully") Google considers as not being content and is in violation with their TOS.

Re: What kind of server are you using for your forums?

I started with a shared server, but it took up too much server resources and I had to go to a VPS. I then ended up having to upgrade RAM a couple of times. I now have a dedicated server with an Intel Xeon GS-1220 processor, 8GB RAM, 500 GB SSD DRIVE. It serves about 5 million pages a month without i...

Apparently you did. Maybe he's just a kid as well? He's good at projecting anyway. Too bad he refused to post a link to his forum. It probably would have been quite amusing to visit it.

Thanks, Robert2017. It was a fun read.

Re: Require location in profile for posting

I have run my forum for 20 years. It started allowing guest posting, but that when away after a coupe of years when spammers started showing up in large numbers. From then it has been a battle against the spam bots and I have finally hit upon a combination that works well. I get maybe one or two pos...

One other thought: Ignore it. If it really is a troll, they will tire of doing it after awhile.

Re: How to stop guests from adding to topic view counts?

Just remove the post count display in the index page (comment it out in the template). It's extraneous information anyway. If you use the "hot topic" icon, replace it with the regular icon. I don't know why you would think that something this trivial would be written into the script. Is it part of a...

Re: finally migrated to mybb here is my 2 cents

I've only used phpbb and vBulletin recently, so can only speak to the two. Generally they suffer from a lack of usability testing. vBulletin is the worse of the two for instinctive use. The pbpbb ACP is a mess, but I dig through it. I'm more concerned with the user side experience. I run a very simp...

Re: Require location in profile for posting

The mod on question is Spam Hammer , a version created for phpbb that never made it out of beta. Its best feature it it allows filtering of posts to exclude URLs and Email addresses, causing bot submissions to fail. Coupled with moderator approval of the first post, absolutely no spam has gotten thr...

Re: Require location in profile for posting

I think my best option is to drop this idea altogether. According to the upgrade information, moving to 3.2 will mean losing my custom style and the mod that has keep my forum spam free for the past decade.

Since I have a dedicated server, I can simply elect not to change to php 7.

Re: Require location in profile for posting

Where? User and Groups > Custom profile fields Reads "No items yet" So I assume you mean I need to create a new field. OK. So will this mean I will then have two locations displayed? There is already one location field existing in phpbb. I realise I keep asking the same question, I haven't gotten an...

Re: Require location in profile for posting

The phpbb default is that a user may select to add their location in the User Control Panel > Profile. It's not something that you can select to be required input when somebody registers. I want a new user to select a user name, choose a password, and enter their location to become a member. The loc...

Re: Require location in profile for posting

Thank you for your reply. Is phpbb_location what is used in the profile now? If it is, will creating a field with that name in Users and Groups > Custom profile fields overwrite what is already been entered my members? If it's not, will the uses that have entered location information already then ha...

Require location in profile for posting

I would like to add a requirement of having a location in a member profile before someone can post. This would be automatic. If the field is blank, they would get an error message telling them to add a location. If the field is filled in, posting would be normal.
