I can think of several different reasons: People don't want it to appear as though they're using free software, because they're trying to run a business site People don't want to appear as though they're using phpBB, because they've set up a whole site around the forums and/or significantly modified...

If your host limits you to 500KB of disk space, then you won't be able to run phpBB3. You won't be able to run phpBB2, for that matter. You probably won't be able to have much of anything, actually, except perhaps a few static HTML pages, if you don't use a lot of images.

There's no limit to what you can do with phpBB, assuming you have the technical and creative skills to do it. It really depends on exactly what you want to do: There are tons and tons of MODs out there, and there are custom coders who can probably do most things that you can envision. You might also...

OpenID is the only thing I know of for this that's really feasible (at least, according to some) for this purpose, at this point in time. Damnian is the one who was developing an OpenID MOD , but I think he might have frozen its development. It's a pretty neat idea, but I don't really know how pract...

Once we got to our new server I altered the robots.txt file so that they can once again spider the content, but I have continued to block pages like the memberlist and other "non-content" pages. Would you mind showing me how you did that please? thanks! Kitty Give this a try, adjusting it for the p...

Google does offer a "crawl rate" option with their webmaster tools, which can help you slow down Googlebot down if it's going too fast. I don't know how effective it would be in comparison to a robots.txt file, but it's an option. :)

1. Keep your Board Up to date: This is contrary to a "Best Practices" approach to management. Also your "tip" about never deleting the copyright link presents and issue. Using the standard unmodified copyright link is seen by many as an invitation to forum spam. Uh, I don't know what you're talking...

There is a MOD which will add signatures retroactively. It's quite old, though, so I can't say if it still works. (And if you've just got a couple of posts, it might not be worth the trouble.)

The main thing about these discussion forums to keep in mind is that they're for discussing a very limited range of topics. Drathbun pointed out that GD "is a luxery here, not the purpose of the site," but I would put it as "this is a chance for the community that normally inhabits these forums for ...

The only real vulnerability in passwords here is to dictionary attacks: If you use "apple" as your password, someone can use a list of common words and eventually get it. But, since phpBB has a cap on the number of times you can try to login within a period of time, that's only an issue if someone h...

In general, yes. Since 2.0.x is feature-frozen, most of the changes in versions are bugfixes are security patches, and so version changes aren't likely to affect the functioning of MODs (until Olympus, of course). If a MOD was released for a much older version of the software, then I would recommend...

if you do not use your forum and you do not want to let spammers, then close your forum :D Organizations like companies have a tendency to adopt a software to handle some need, and then completely neglect that software. This goes for forums, wikis, and most anything else. It's some combination of i...
