Re: Preventing SPAM - Bots and Humans

elephantspike wrote: ... Add a text field that says "leave this space blank" on the user cp_register page

I think it is a great idea, I had an odd experience implementing it. I called the "blank" field "blank" and none of the bots filled it in.

Still I think it is a good idea.

Concerning the cats and dogs method, the BBC article says It uses an index of two million images to make it impossible for attackers to classify all the pictures and break the system. The current version of phpBB uses a pool of 2,176,782,336 captchas. That is two billion, not two million. If I only ...

Your only real choice is to change hosts. That is if you really think the six minutes is important. Your host does not think so, maybe you shouldn't either. To do what you want to do, you will need change your times by an offset amount that is based on a known better time source. The way to do this ...

Re: SQL questions (not support)

How are post's with commas and apostrophes and colons, etc, stored in databases'? There are several ways to do this. I'm not sure which one phpBB uses. But basically you need to "escape" the special characters. This is done by prefixing them with backslashes. A php command to do this is addslashes....

The previous response indicating you need a database created before the install is incorrect. The phpBB install process creates the database for you. Nope. You create the database. phpbb creates the tables in the database. Ah, yes. I was wrong. My memory is getting faulty. You do have to create the...

Your message suggests thatthe defalt behavior of phpBB is to allow a person who has forgotten their password the ability to through self service to reset and change it. This sounds good, but you go on to suggest that the mere entry of an email address changes the password. If this is true, I would s...

If you want to completely hide who is online, just remove that section of HTML from your index page in all of your templates. You are loooking for the file index_body.tpl While this is all you need, if you wish to be fancy you can add directives to the .tpl file to only show to registered users. Or,...

Re: Spam bot

I get over 500 spam messages You are expressing a problem that someone else had before you. The solution for this is for you read the introductory "before you post" message and determine which part of it applies to you. Having done that you should then wade through the 90+ pages of help material yo...

The Description meta-tag is a very useful one for you to add. I know Google uses it, and some other search engines probably do as well. In the same vein, the nofollow tag will keep people from draining PR from your site, I'm not sure which file it shoud be implemented in. I don't care to use it. The...

You asked a question about how to do better banning, but I suspect your actual question relates to your wanting to get rid of spammers. Banning, per se, has little to do with stopping spam. The reason is that most spammers do not post from a repeat IP address, and they often use a different username...

Re: Using a thread as a news cast on your homepage?

I understand that it is possible to have a forum thread directly link to the homepage and print there. So that any replies to the thread get added on the homepage. For this I use a Mod called Recent Toics by Acid. http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/589 This script displays the most recent topics on...
