Re: phpBB vs. vBulletin

Fair enough, but I'm more interested in the general consensus of my userbase than individual anecdotes. And that consensus is, yes, a collection of individual anecdotes. :D To move, I think that you need more than a 50%+1 majority; you'd need a mandate (ah, political season). Steve Not really, you ...

Re: phpBB vs. vBulletin

To answer your question Robert, it's not a case of any particular feature in XenForo that makes it superior to phpBB + MODs in my view, it's more the fact that it doesn't feel dated the way phpBB does, it feels slick and modern and comparable to a modern Web 2.0 website like Facebook/Youtube/Twitte...

Re: phpBB vs. vBulletin

Well cost has never been an issue for me, as I imagine is the case with other large boards or commercial/professional websites. To answer your question Robert, it's not a case of any particular feature in XenForo that makes it superior to phpBB + MODs in my view, it's more the fact that it doesn't f...

Re: phpBB vs. vBulletin

if you say vbulletin is on the decline now, what forum software is expanding in your opinion. Given that he said that "[vBulletin's] developers jumped ship to found XenForo", I think the inference is clear. ;) Steve Indeed. XenForo is definitely the best forum software available right now by a cons...

Re: phpBB vs. vBulletin

To those of us running large boards and websites, the amount vBulletin costs is pretty much a non-issue, I can see why it'd obviously be a consideration for small communities though. But yeah, my point is I don't think the fact phpBB is free (as in beer) is a crucial factor in itself for medium to l...

Re: [Discuss] Introducing Forumatic - Managed phpBB Hosting

Are you affiliated with phpBB/Forumatic, yuritenshi, or was that just something you concluded yourself (genuine question, I don't know either way)? I didn't even think the distinction would be as great as that, and expected it to be more closely tied - kinda like the Ubuntu Foundation and Canonical,...

Re: How to be a better moderator

If you cultivate an environment conducive to normal, decent behaviour then moderation is only really necessary for handling spambots and routine merge/move type tasks. If you can't do that then even with all the moderation in the world your forum will still be a mess. Heavy-handed moderation almost ...

Re: The Best Thing that phpBB Can Do: Merge

That's not much of a problem and is pretty much FUD. Of course it's a problem, it's completely disconnected from reality to assume otherwise. If a user feels phpBB isn't meeting their requirements anymore and are thinking of migrating (as fac7orx said) then you can't just brush their concern aside ...

Re: The Best Thing that phpBB Can Do: Merge

phpBB 3.1 and phpBB 3.2 address pretty much everything you've mentioned. Yeah, but the problem there is that they're not released yet, and we have no idea when they will be released. What matters to users is the software available right now (and I suppose the near future with a definitive deadline)...

Re: Why there isnt atleast beta version of 3.1??

The guy was asking for advice, he mentioned he was considering switching to Xenforo but wanted to know if it was worth hanging in to see what 3.1 brings. My answer was appropriate and based on my own experience and phpBB's development history. It's your problem if you want to take that as some sort ...

Re: Why there isnt atleast beta version of 3.1??

Without getting too much involved in the business case of the idea (and I'm sure you've done the market research anyway) I'd have thought that the biggest selling point was the phpBB brand itself. I understand why team members may be apprenhensive about the project entering into a for profit ventur...

Re: The Best Thing that phpBB Can Do: Merge

See the 30 page falling behind topic for an in-depth analysis of both this problem and its solutions. Do you have anything new to add to the conversation? One could be forgiven for not being aware of that topic, considering it's now on page six due to being locked while the conversation was still a...

Re: Why there isnt atleast beta version of 3.1??

so my question is, how much more time are we going to wait? It took about 1.5 years for 3.0 to go from beta to gold release . So if they do a similar length of testing the gold release will probably be released within 1.5 to 2 years. But of course this all depends on when they release a beta. My su...

Re: Vote phpBB as the Best Forum Software of 2012

ugh. MyBB is just awful. it's easy to install plug ins but the styles are horrible. even SMF is a little better. I voted for phpBB I think the choice of styles is pretty much on par with phpBB. There are things I like/dislike about both, but I've always favoured phpBB generally. I'm not sure which ...

Re: facebook login for forum a good idea ?

These kind of people are not willing to participate to your forum. If they are willing to participate, they are willing to spend their 5 minutes to register. In fact, it takes less than 5 minutes to register in a forum, at least for me. And if they are active at your forum, they'll never forget the...
