Re: hammered by newly registered members

Still going strong with the Q&A asking something about the graphics of the forum.
No spam in weeks now. Just legitimate signups.
Seems to be the way to go. :)

Forum DB backup question.

Of the three choices to do our backups in, gzip, bzip2 and text, which...if any...is/are the most reliable....ie are any of the three more at risk for failure when backing up or restoring the database?

Thanks a ton in advance.

Re: easiest way to integrate phpBB into a site?

What I do is start with styling phpBB3 the way I want it, then build the rest of my webpages to match it. Its a bit limited as far as design goes. Actually, it's not limited, it's only limited to ability, you can do anything with phpBB and php + HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Good point. I only know HT...

Re: DB Table 'overhead' and deleted topics.

The phpBB backup and restore drops the existing tables and recreates them, so any overhead in the tables is eliminated. Thats interesting. I may have just assumed otherwise. I'll have to definitely check it out because if thats the case then theres no real need for me to bother with optimizing unle...

Re: DB Table 'overhead' and deleted topics.

Database overhead does not affect the size of dumps as it only exists in internal database structures. If you are backing up data for its content as opposed to performing a system-wide backup of everything, you should always dump databases instead of backing up their raw files. Not sure of the diff...

Re: easiest way to integrate phpBB into a site?

meh, rebuilding my site using phpBB's template system is a lot of work. also i somehow don't really like the idea of integrating my site into phpbb and not vise versa. oh well, thanks. If this is the case you could use a page with an iframe for your forum. Just have a template of your website page ...

Re: easiest way to integrate phpBB into a site?

hey! short story time. i have a site, with its own design and login system. now i am trying to figure 2 things : 1) is there an easy way to combine registeration and login of people from my site with the forum's member system? 2) is there an easy way to combine the forum into the site? what i mean ...

Re: DB Table 'overhead' and deleted topics.

Since you are using less than 1% of the available database space there doesn't seem to be any need to optimise the database and with small databases you are unlikely to see any benefit from doing so. You should make sure you backup the database before making any changes, including an optimisation, ...

Re: DB Table 'overhead' and deleted topics.

depending on your board, 10MB could be used up in only a few posts. that is an extremely small number to try to limit database size to. robert Most of these boards are for temporary material that gets deleted/pruned after so long. The ones that arent like that are locked and pretty much read only. ...

Re: DB Table 'overhead' and deleted topics.

OPTIMIZE TABLE is hazardous - the documentation is quite clear about this: if you have a huge table it can also totally halt your whole MySQL DBMS when running out of disk space during this operation. Obviously nobody knows or cares about this. meh. Mine are small. I wouldnt let any database get ab...

Re: [Discuss] Preventing Spam in phpBB3

The one forum I webmaster for a church that was getting hammered a while back hasnt been spammed at all since changing the Q&A to asking about something about the graphics in the forum itself. Ive checked all of the forums I own and run for others and so far so good. Seems to be an easy enough thing...

Re: DB Table 'overhead' and deleted topics.

The place to ask about a MOD is that MOD's Discussion/Support forum, not here. There will be a lot more people with experience of the MOD there. Thanks, I'll give it a look there :) I installed it on all my boards and it works perfect. Much easier than having to open the other software just to opti...

Re: DB Table 'overhead' and deleted topics.

I´ve had the same issue as you, but now i´m optimizing the MySQL database overhead once a week and it has speeded up my site significantly :) I wonder, why it cannot be done from the ACP without a MOD :) phpBB runs on many databases, not just MySQL. If one starts adding phpMyAdmin tools to the ACP,...
