No spam in weeks now. Just legitimate signups.
Seems to be the way to go.

Of the three choices to do our backups in, gzip, bzip2 and text, which...if any...is/are the most reliable....ie are any of the three more at risk for failure when backing up or restoring the database?

Database overhead does not affect the size of dumps as it only exists in internal database structures. If you are backing up data for its content as opposed to performing a system-wide backup of everything, you should always dump databases instead of backing up their raw files. Since you are using less than 1% of the available database space there doesn't seem to be any need to optimise the database and with small databases you are unlikely to see any benefit from doing so. I´ve had the same issue as you, but now i´m optimizing the MySQL database overhead once a week and it has speeded up my site significantly :) I wonder, why it cannot be done from the ACP without a MOD :) phpBB runs on many databases, not just MySQL.
