Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

A custom bbcode for image with ALT text will do part of the job for you. They are easy enough to set up in the ACP. I never did it for my board, as images have generally been disabled anyway. At least that way, users can give an ALT text if you can persuade them to use that bbcode instead of the reg...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

It is a hugely difficult one to call, and you can only make the call on a case-by-case basis. The facility for ALT text should be there, but there is little more frustrating for a screen-reader user than to plough through ALT texts for every image on a page. A few years back, I seem to remember, I t...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

Finally, with the migration of my site to a new host, I have upgraded everything to V3.2 and implemented pretty well all the changes I proposed plus a few more. They are running at http://www.wordwizard.com/phpbb3/ Most of the changes involved adding ARIA markup in several places, also including som...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

You can still upload it somewhere and give me a link (together with a link to your forum if it's public so I can see what it does^^), it can be a great help and source of inspiration if you don't have the time or motivation to contribute them directly to the core. I have now sent you a PM detailing...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

For a random example from the Wiki page, the alt text contains alt="\left(x+{\frac {b}{2a}}\right)^{2}={\frac {b^{2}-4ac}{4a^{2}}}." Without making any special settings on the screenreader, this is read as left x+ frac b 2a right 2 frac b 2 4ac 4a 2 which is not a great deal of use. If you switch yo...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

Not being a scientist, I have no idea how a blind person would want to hear a formula such as that. Essentially, you would have to translate the formula into natural language and then put that natural language string inside a tag pair immediately after the image. <span class="sr-only>Formula in spok...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

Okay, so it's coming along nicely now. I have incorporated much of the basic material that could go into the core, but I need to have a good listen to every page now. These two screenshots give you a good idea of what a difference the addition of further landmarks and ARIA labels makes. They were ta...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

Edited to include two new items! Thanks. Motivation is not the problem, but time and skill are! The board is at http://www.wordwizard.com/phpbb3/index.php Go to a topic with plenty of replies, such as this one and toggle the accessibility button in the header bar on and off. The topic page has the m...

Style-specific language variables

I have hunted high and low for the last two hours for this. When 3.1 was introduced, there was a lot of talk about allowing style-specific language variables, but I cannot find any current documentation on the issue. Is it possible in 3.2 to define custom language variables for a style, or do they h...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

By the way, if you want to contribute your modifications directly in the core they are all welcome Sorry, I forgot to respond to this. Beyond what has already been done by the team and a number of additions that would probably be entirely uncontentious, my own modifications add a considerable degre...

Re: V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

Over the next weeks, I shall be adapting much of the work I did for 3.0.9, and I shall undoubtedly come across several areas which could benefit from further attention. I shall collate them all and either post them in Area51 or, preferably, PM them to one of the two developers mentioned above if I m...

V 3.2.0 accessibility: A big thanks

A few years back, I tried without success to persuade the development team that it was important to include far more support for assistive technology, i.e. screen readers. As a blind user, I set about modding my own board massively to provide the kind of support I envisaged. The result was that I wa...

Re: Language variables for styles

Thanks for the swift reply. That is how I understood the situation. I may well look at it as a mod with extensive changes to the prosilver template and a board preference option for displaying navigation links for keyboard only users and a verbose option for screen reader users.

Language variables for styles

I am working on and off on a couple of accessibility styles for keyboard-only users and screen reader users. Essentially they involve adding a number of navigation links in strategic places to reduce the amount of keyboard navigation required to use a site. Some of these are items which are not avai...
