If you are assuming in that example that the value will be available in $user automatically, this is the problem. You are relying on a feature of PHP that is a potential security risk (and off on many installs anyway), which phpBB takes steps to turn off. To access that value you need to use $HTTP_...

punbb pass is 40 chars and phpbb is 32?

im trying to convert my punbb board to phpbb. but, as i understand it phpbb and punbb both use SHA-1 encryption for storing passwords. the thing is my punbb board uses varchar(40) and phpbb uses 32. is there anything i can do to dump the passwords into phpbb so my users dont have to create new ones?
