Re: Who thinks the Pope should be Jailed?

Partly by way of following my own request to be on topic, and partly because I have been following this in the news for some time, I am finding the BBC coverage of this helpful. For example: http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/front_page/newsid_8985000/8985835.stm http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europ...

Re: Who thinks the Pope should be Jailed?

To try to slam that "leeway door" shut this far along isn't a good moderation technique. And, yes, I meant to use the word "slam". When a moderator doesn't use "please" and attempt to show some expression of understanding of extenuating circumstances that may influence...

Re: Who thinks the Pope should be Jailed?

On looking at what I wrote I should really apologize for tossing in the definition of the noun moderate by way of explaining my view of a moderator's responsibilities. While I think the idea is to have moderate, sensible discussion, and while I think that a moderator is responsible to help that to h...

Re: Who thinks the Pope should be Jailed?

And I think you should not read into my post something I did not say. Because I'm a moderator it's part of my job to moderate the discussion--as in keeping it from wandering off topic or into inflamatory harshness that does not move the discussion forward. Hitler, the Inquisition, Richard Cheney, et...

Re: Who thinks the Pope should be Jailed?

Justice and fairness start at the level of individuals and what we say, do, and don't do. Venting isn't always the most just way to express ourselves. This is a topic about the criminal and moral liability of the Pope. It isn't about Blair, Bush, etc. It isn't about the state of justice in the world...

Re: First forum you ever joined:

My first bulletin board experiences were pre-Web. Things were considerably different back then, so I suppose they don't really count for purposes here.

I don't remember what my first Web-based BBS experience was, but it was powered by WWWBoard.

Re: Configuring a CGI script on Yahoo!

Hi,

While it would be nice if the accumulated knowledge at phpBB.com could help many people with questions like yours, the policy-makers have said no to that idea.

Re: Can I start a thread about my new Kindle novel?

Thank you for asking. :)

You can't appropriately promote the novel here (that would fall afoul of rules prohibiting spam), but if there is something about it that we can actually discuss in some sort of generic way--plot devices, character development, etc.--then we can at least give it a try.

Re: SEF/SEO URLs

I personally think a downside is the the fact that bulletin boards are places where content is dynamic, not static, and that's by design. "Pretty" URIs may require confirmation or updating each time a topic is split, merged, or renamed. I understand the benefits of "pretty" URIs ...

While I think phpBB 2 has several strengths, I suggest not considering phpBB 2 for a new board simply because phpBB 2 is no longer maintained.

Naturally, we suggest phpBB. But downloading and trying any that seem useful to your purpose is the best way to clear the confusion. :)
