Re: Security and Alternative Custom BB

Great insights, Adam. I do appreciate what motivates your thoughts on this. It is true that spam is not a security issue by itself. And it is true that ultimately, a spammer could manually register and post their rubbish. But is is also true that canned software packages are downloadable and may be ...

Security and Alternative Custom BB

Hello, It's been a long time since I posted on phpBB. I've been a member since 2008 and had put my first phpBB long before joining this forum. I will be honest and reveal that I dumped my old phpBB, in favor of writing custom blogs and forums. I won't even use WordPress and avoid CMS systems like Dr...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

the ideal solution, as is mentioned many times in this topic and elsewhere, is to make your board "unique" compared to the stock install. Yes, making your board a moving target will help immensely too, ie. being unique from one period of time to another. One of the things that Crackers and other bl...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

Hello, the frist step in technical order to fight against spammers is the DNSBL check. phpBB3 offers this feature by default. Advanced Block MOD is extending this feature very much to be really a effective weapon. All other things - like CAPTCHA or CPF - are working some steps later. Although you c...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

need to be ever vigilant and persistent about taking out the garbage The point is to prevent the garbage being dumped in the first place so you don't have to waste time removing it. Posting some terms and conditions will give them a laugh, but thats all. The point is to cover all the bases. 1) Prev...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

Unless of course, you allow guests to post, in which case you are just inviting them. A person must register to use my BB, but otherwise, like this, the PHPBB site, anyone may register and post. That's the whole idea, a freely open BB for its purpose, and only that purpose and no other. Perhaps the...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

What you need to realize is that spammers, crackers, all these black hat types, collaborate with each other. They actually hold conferences, often attended by a member of the FBI, where they share their warped passions. And when they work on their nasty deeds, they collaborate. That's what these li...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

I think you have the wrong idea here. You don't have to police the site. Members are automatically refused links, by a small piece of php code, until they have made 15 (or whatever number you choose) genuine posts. OK, I slipped and read 'posts' where you had the word 'links'. But still ... I think...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

Well then do as I do and simply not allow members to post links until they have submitted a number of genuine posts. In my case it's 15. Yes, I saw that feature and am evaluating it. It seems to me however, that at this time, I would rather visibly inspect for the spam, take out the garbage and ban...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

I still cannot believe that there are still people going to these lengths! :? Just read the first post and make up your own custom fields. It's simple and it works! No, It doesn't work. Refer to the original post by iwisdom ... What about human spammers? Fighting human spammers is more difficult th...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

where is this code? 1) Create a file with all the domains you want to foil /bad/banneddomains.txt contents look like this ... dumb.com spammer.dumb.com ... etc. To find those domains, use your log files, etc. or whatever method you have. Some hosts list all links coming into your site. There are wa...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

Hello Bearstate, it seems that you want to add a manual block list. Hi Martin, Nah, that won't work because the spammers are not using bots. They are linking to site and other spammers follow the links. They apparently are already countering measures taken in new mods to BBs to prevent them from sp...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

OK, You plug this little gem into your phpbb index page and possibly the ucp.php too. Actually no, don't put this into the index page or the ucp.php. I tried that and it will cause problems. I got this working on my main site pages, but still as yet, not in PHPBB. Ideally, you'd want to put it into...

Re: Preventing Spam in 3.0 [*Read First Post*]

OK, I went and did it. It was simple. This little bit of code will redirect anyone coming to your board via a spam link, a link from some spammer site to yours. Here's the code ... <?php $url = getenv("HTTP_REFERER"); $purl = parse_url($url); $host = $purl['host']; ?> <script language='Javascript'><...
