Re: Update 3.0.11 to 3.2?

Thank you for the answer. Somewhere I read (two months ago) that I would have to upgrade to 3.1.x first.

I, too, am running 3.0.11 and had been waiting for 3.2 before I "make the move".

Re: Updated 3.0.8 to 3.0.9 ...

Updated Database from version 3.0.8 to version 3.0.9 That entry is the FIRST message I received when I upgraded. The second (and last) message I received (in the Admin log) reads: Updated phpBB from version 3.0.8 to version 3.0.9 Admittedly, I used the automated process, where you go to /install/ w...

Re: MySQL Backup/Restore Corrupts Special Characters

I was only half right to blame "lousy web hosting".

It forced me to use BigDump. And I corrupted the special characters during a database restore using BigDump by not setting:

Code: Select all

$db_connection_charset = 'utf8';

Re: MySQL Backup/Restore Corrupts Special Characters

Yes, restoring a post from the last backup before I went to "bad" hosting, works perfectly! I really appreciate your help, as I was growing very concerned that I wouldn't be able to solve this, with things getting worse and worse. Now I know I have a backup that I can recover older posts from. Thank...

Re: MySQL Backup/Restore Corrupts Special Characters

I have now tracked this down to a brief period (Dec. 11 to Jan. 30) where the web hosting I moved to for that period, then abandoned, may not have been configured properly. How are you doing the restore? I used cPanel's Backups feature to do the Restore. I will report back ASAP if the blame seems to...

MySQL Backup/Restore Corrupts Special Characters

No matter whether I use cPanel Backup, phpBB3's built-in backup or phpMyAdmin's Export, after I restore the phpBB database, I have corrupted some of the less common special characters. For example, open double quote ("“") becomes “ after the first backup/restore. And a second backup/restore of the...

Re: Transferring Database - DNS & File Questions

Before I did my first move a couple of years ago, I did a lot of thinking and asking questions, including here on this forum. Since our phpBB forum is available 24/7, we wanted a short outage in the middle of the night. The web site is huge, but the vast majority of storage in files, not in the phpB...

Re: [Split From] Importing Users & Posts into new board

Reviewing an outdated article on a similar subject: http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/how-to-move-a-phpbb-20x-board-to-a-new-server/ I see that cookie/domain/script path settings can sometimes be a problem. So, you may want to keep this article close at hand, just in case: http://www.phpbb.com/kb/arti...

Re: [Split From] Importing Users & Posts into new board

The phpBB database and files should be kept "in lock step" when Cloning a Test System, as you are trying to do. Although most "things" are stored in the phpBB database, Avatars and a few other things are stored as files. So, the cloning process becomes: copy both the files and database to a new loca...

Re: Restore users and data

The closest that I've come to doing what you are trying to do was a conversion from phpBB Version 2 to Version 3 a year or two ago. It was not a straight forward upgrade as I had to convert all the HTML in posts in Version 2 to BBCodes in Version 3. Yet, I did not want to be down very long on an act...

Re: General Errors - Please help?

These 3 errors have one thing in common: your hosting company's MySQL database server stopped processing a database query that phpBB sent to it. This could be intentional (query took too long) or unintentional (failure on the database server). Record the exact time and date and your time zone for th...

Re: Changing extensions, etc

does that actually physically change all the links throughout the site, or just the included files? That particular piece of code is found in every .php file that I could find that is directly executed, rather than included. It sets the php Extension to whatever the extension is of the current file...

Re: Changing extensions, etc

Is there any easy way to do this? Since you never mentioned you could even spell "Apache", I was forced to assume you were like most phpBB admins and just used what was set up for you. In which case, Apache changes would not have been "easy". I also assumed that if you were such a web guru, you wou...

Re: Changing extensions, etc

I don't see how you will be able to change the .php extension of phpBB files and still expect phpBB to work. phpBB, as the name suggests, is written in php. php code will not run in a file with an .htm/.html extension. In addition, .php files are normally protected from visibility by hackers and suc...

Re: [split from] how to update to 3.08

From my experience (dating back well into phpBB2), this is the best Updater ever. I have a medium number of mods, perhaps a dozen and a half, at least two thirds of which are hand-made, and the Updater merged all my mods successfully.

Why not build a clone of your phpBB forum and give it a try?
