If I typed his name in ACP it said he didn’t exist, but he shows in member lists and you could search for him ok. I changed his name slightly and then changed it back and now all is ok again?!? A database glitch I assume?

Yes unfortunately the IPs weren't grouped so I ended up manually banning them one by one. Seemed to ban ten and another ten would pop up. I think I eventually banned over a hundred IPs but it seems to have worked.
