The ranks are done using a loop to check if the postcount is greater than or equal to the next mark. For special ranks, it simply selects from the DB and overrides. Whether or not they use a special rank is determined by one of the user fields.

The script was using more memory than is allowed by the server. Did this happen while viewing a really large thread?

Might I suggest not having the post text at 10px font? It's a bit of a strain to read when it's that small. I find that 12px or 13px works pretty well.

I think he wants to display the entire posts and not just links. It can be done in one SQL query. The topic rows all contain a first_post and last_post field so you can use that as a handle for chaining data from different tables.
