Re: Evil bot causes host to shutdown my site

You're welcome. If you go CloudFlare, be sure to read my post on that. If you go to the link in my Sig, there's a follow up post on CloudFlare there. Let me know if you have any questions. If you want layer 7 DDoS protection you'll have to pay CloudFlare. I do and it's about 30 cents a month, thoug...

Re: Evil bot causes host to shutdown my site

No, the htaccess file can only handle so much. If you use it to start blocking massive amounts of IPs it will slow your site down and you'll start to get errors. You're better off with something that is coded in PHP like CIDRAM that can handle tons of IP blocks and still allow your site to load fas...

Re: Evil bot causes host to shutdown my site

If you don't even have access logs in your FTP directory then that doesn't sound like a good host. You might want to venture on over to webhostingtalk.com and find something better. I do have access logs, but not real-time. Since HostGator shuts off the site after 90s of cpu usage >50%, log files t...

Re: Evil bot causes host to shutdown my site

Just talk with your host and tell them to block bad bots they know what to do. Yeah, that's what I thought, too. Clearly, that hasn't been enough. Look into CIDRAM and Ninjafirewall. [...] CloudFlare or your host could help. Thanks. I hadn't heard of the last two, but CloudFlare was one of the sugg...

Re: Evil bot causes host to shutdown my site

Wow, I really appreciate the super-quick response! Thanks to both of you. i had an issue in December of last year from "The Knowledge AI" bot putting a massive load on my hosting. Yes, I can see that the tech support for the hosting service has added similar code to the .htaccess file, but it must n...

Evil bot causes host to shutdown my site

Basically, there's a bot coming from 85.25.x.y that generates 45,000+ hits in 90 seconds against the various forum pages (like viewtopic and viewforum). The IP appears to be a guest (ie., not a known bot or registered user). I need a MOD that will track how many hits are coming from a given IP (logg...

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

Okay, excellent. And thank you for your help; I'm glad I finally noticed that the dropdown list wasn't giving me all of the forums on the site.

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

Wait a minute. Maybe I've found something. It looks like the "General" forum is only one of three top-level forums. When I use the "General [+subforums]" on the Users' forum permissions page, it doesn't get the other top-level forums. I think this is it. When I select the "All Forums" checkbox, I ge...

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

On a similar topic, how do I "Test user's permissions"? If I choose that link then I end up as that user, right? So if that user is in "post approval mode", what should I see if I try to start a post while using their permissions? Could the user be using the Drafts feature to somehow get around the ...

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

this should be the way to go and solve your issue. You'll have to log in approve the posts. Thanks, but I tried that above and it didn't work. I've put the user in their own private group and have tried setting both the group and user permissions. No love. :( So which is it? Should the field be set...

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

My Permissions page screenshot is attached at the bottom. It doesn't have a link called "View forum permissions", as you can see. Since "View forum-based permissions" is the closest I could get, that's what I chose. :) But maybe the problem is terminology. In my last post, I put a picture of the act...

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

Go into Permissions / View forum permissions I used the Permissions tab at the top and View forum-based permissions in the bottom left corner of the page. Select the forum posted in I used the "General [+subforums]". Type the user's name into the Find a member box and click View permissions. That w...

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

Yes. In fact, I just followed the steps documented for the OP and in the mean time that same user has posted again without approval being required. :( I am looking at a post with a timestamp of 4:03PM and I made the change to the user's settings at 1:15PM. :( What do you need from me to diagnose thi...

Re: Need to moderate one individual user...how?

Okay, I followed these steps, too, as I have the same problem. But... I had created a group called "Post Approval Only" and put the user into that group, removing the user from the default "Registered Users" group. (The PAO group was set as the default group, even before removing them from RU.) Yet ...
