Re: Adding noindex, follow to some pages.

I use non-board html 'portals' with relevant meta-data, etc., as the main hit and link from there to the board on a different domain that blocks all bots. Among other things... Why on earth would I block Google from indexing my site? To get much less visitors and money through ads? Hey, depends on w...

Re: Adding noindex, follow to some pages.

Just dont expect robots.txt to be obeyed by google is all I say. Microsoft are the main offenders for this. Bing takes no notice of the robots file at all. But MS never has. They also ignore 'nofollow', etc. But I agree - I block 'em. Certain google IPs are well behaved, others are not. I selective...

Re: Updating from 3.0.6 SVN

Yep, I do have Xampp installed on a Mac here. For phpBB, in this circumstance, how does this go? 'Scuse me, I'm no expert in this area. Are you saying copy what I currently have on the server into to xampp and then update this with the new files? Hmm, just noticed I have a pile of joomla stuff in th...

Re: Updating from 3.0.6 SVN

fyi, this was the original problem when trying to install 3.0.6, btw. An appropriate representation of the requested resource /.../adm/index.php could not be found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request . http://...

Re: Updating from 3.0.6 SVN

Thanks for the advice. Was trying to avoid the full update only as I've made some personal tweaks for the client here and there over the years and I'll have to remember them all -- it could take way longer  Trying to balance the hassle against the need... hmm... Okey doke, thanks again. Cheers,...

Re: Updating from 3.0.6 SVN

When downloading, which package do I choose to update from ? 3.0.6 or 3.0.7? I don't want to install a completely new package, only the necessary files. How necessary is it to update? Am I missing important security improvements, for ex.? The reason I was advised to use SVN was because the 3.0.6 upd...

Updating from 3.0.6 SVN

The last update I did from 3.0.4 to 3.0.6 ran into unsolvable problems. I was advised on this board to use the SVN. Worked okay. I've put off updating since then! But getting round to it now. Not started yet. Questions - I don't want to 'clean install' a new version but just update the relevent file...

Re: Spam ethics.

Hard to say where its actually originating from. Far and away most of the hits to my forums - scanning, attempted auto hitting the reg file, and what-not - are addresses in RU and UA. A continuous rain. Then CN - but I don't think these actually originate there. After that its a mix of NL, DE, US. T...

Re: Spam ethics.

Here in UK I think spamming was actually made illegal, some time ago. (Not sure what the legislation actually was or what specific activities it applied to. Be interesting to look that up.)
Pointless really. Its hard to define and there are no country borders on the internet...

Re: Extending PHPBB with document management

This is exactly what I need.
If you attach a Word doc or pdf to a post, how does it display? I've never tried it.

Re: spamming job vacancy on peopleperhour website

Really don't want to add fuel to the fire, buuut - It could be said that this guy is doing almost exactly what the job ad (second described above) was asking. Bringing up legit questions with the context of the forum, making sure the company gets a mention. Eventually getting round to posting a lin...

Re: spamming job vacancy on peopleperhour website

Thanks, Noxwizard Interesting because it directly relates to the original question. What is spamming, what is legit marketing, what is a post that promotes a product out of context yet remains okay and, importantly, how is a moderator meant to judge? Different people come to different conclusions. T...
