Re: is there a way for moderators to let each other know..

Only by direct communication. I've been looking at the code which determines what a user has read (or, the search which determine's what the user hasn't read). Couldn't the OP get what he's looking for with a customized SQL select using all the moderator's ID's (i.e., like an inner join of the "unr...

Re: If on index page

The /includes/functions.php file sets the variable "S_FORUM_ID." It contains "0" when you're at the index page. You can check this by editing your /styles/{style name}/templates/index_body.html template and adding "<p> here {S_FORUM_ID}</p>" somewhere in the file. You can add that somewhere in the v...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

Spam is on the roll over @ my site  They are starting to bypass both recaptcha and custom profile fields. Any tips? From reading this thread, it sounds like spam bots are programmed for standard phpbb captcha devices. Custom profile fields just only work until a bot owner feels your forum is...

Re: Why fight them?

On my board, *link removed* I have a forum called, "Sell your stuff here!" and that's where all the SPAM goes. Most Users respect that, including robots. That's an interesting idea. Has anyone else tried that? It's hard to believe spammers would play by the rules if they have a forum dedicated to t...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

Such blacklist-based solutions tend to be iffy at bet -- tools like Akismet only work due to their high adoption (large amount of blacklist data). That being said, they are not included as a phpBB-based solution for them (in the form of a MOD) has not been created yet. Thanks. I agree those tools m...

Re: Preventing Spam in phpBB 3.0.6 [*Read First Post*]

I didn't see any mention in the sticky post about Akismet or Spam Karma . These seem to be designed for blogs, but I read elsewhere that they've been used with forums. Does anyone have an opinion of how these might contribute to anti-spam measures? It sounds like you contact these services with a po...

Re: HELP! My board is being spammed to death!

EDIT: I posted my thoughts about "Akismet" and "Spam Karma" in the spam "sticky" topic: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... #p11588465

It belonged there to begin with. Sorry.

Re: HELP! My board is being spammed to death!

A simple question added to the registration through Custom Profile fields would stop most if not all Spambots from registering. He seems to be using the standard GD Captcha. Are bots able to get around that? I haven't put my forum online yet. I was thinking I would do like phpbb.org does: approve a...

Re: viewforum.php inconsistency in "Return to Board Index."

Maybe if it is a Category that does not show Active Topics, then it does not show the "Return to Index". That is true if it is more than one level deep too. For me, if I went two categories deep, the "<< Return to Board Index" link appeared. It just didn't appear on the first category. (It may be s...

viewforum.php inconsistency in "Return to Board Index."

I think this is a bug in the code. When I go two levels deep into categories or forums, viewforum.php emits a "<< Return to Board Index" link at the bottom of the list of categories and forums. (It's contained in jumpbox.html). But, if I'm only one level deep, it doesn't emit that link. I looked at ...

Re: Why discrepancy in topic length?

Re:_ (the underscore represents a space) Replies add this to the beginning of your subject. So if your subject is 60 characters, replies to be 64 so that Re:_ (again, the underscore represents a space) can be placed before it. Thanks. I didn't think of that. On a reply, the underlying code will tru...

Why discrepancy in topic length?

I noticed that when creating a topic I can enter 60 characters into the Subject field. But, when replying to an existing topic, I can enter 64 characters . I found this in "posting_editor.html:" <dd><input type="text" name="subject" id="subject" size="45" maxlength="<!-- IF S_NEW_MESSAGE -->60<!-- E...

Re: Wildcard search not workin this board?

This board is using a custom Sphinx search plugin that is not fully complete -- some things (like wildcard search in post bodies and the "Search This Topic" option) are not implemented. Thanks. Just a suggestion: It would be helpful if the legend next to the search field described the syntax correc...

Wildcard search not workin this board?

I tried searching for "advertis*" (using the phpbb "Search" page, http://www.phpbb.com/community/search.php). No results. But, if I search for "advertise" or "advertisement" I get results. I tried to search if this had been reported before, but wasn't sure how to construct the search. (BTW: "wildca*...

Re: Forum/Category nesting, and showing sub-forums

My own CN forum has levels quite deep and I myself have brought up the subject in the past. Maybe I should have searched for that. It was such a confusing topic I wasn't sure what the search terms should be. :) I'm evaluating phpbb, mybb and SMF. Initially I liked the latter two better because of t...
