Captchas don't use images, they generate them so you need a captcha that uses a different algorithm (method). hvanleeuwen: Yeah it saddens me seeing how much effort some people spend for this kind of parasitic marketing. Not too soon I believe. Not sure what date the beta is scheduled for.

The best option at this point is either backporting the new captcha or use another one (see my prev post).

ronnel: Do the following:
1) Rename one of the forums you wish to merge to the name of the new forum.

2) Delete the other forums one by one and when prompted, choose to move its posts to the forum you renamed in step 1.

gwerder: Edit it in the Admin Panel and change its category.

Why not replace the phpBB VC with code from the Drupal captcha module which apparently seems to still work. Both are GPL'd and getting it to work should be a snap!
