Mobile styles can be pretty small. Plus CSS files are cached.

And with GZip, the HTML can be pretty small.

Re: <!-- IF BROWSER -->

Why not just use what you suggested; use <!--[if IE 6]> in your template? Conditional comments are far from ideal, and hopefully in the future they will be a distant memory. In web pages that I've produced, if I've ever needed to support an older IE browser, I use a single conditional comment linkin...

Re: Subdomains vs Subdirectories

Having more domains will incur more DNS lookups if users are switching between boards. To be honest I don't think it matters, nor should you even care that much.

Your time would be better spent producing content and making your boards better for your users.

Re: Offical phpbb.com mobile app

The GPL is not compatible with the restrictive iOS developer agreement apparently.
If one were to be developed, it would have to be under an alternative license.

Re: Expections from phpBB 3.1?

question, how much trouble would it be for me to update to 3.1 (when it comes out of course) if I have a lot of mods already installed? Well, like the update from phpBB2, my guess is that all MODs will be removed and only the database will be copied over. But don't fear, I'm sure phpBB 3.0 will be ...

Re: When

He wasn't asking about version 3.1, he wanted to know when version 4 would be out. What version 3.1 will be, or won't be, has nothing to do with his question. He also mentioned features and development, which is why myself and others pointed out phpBB 3.1 would be out sooner (and would obviously ha...

Re: When

Linux kernel 3 has been out for just a few months, for those who don't pay so close of attention to Linux ;) Yeah, true, I was wrong about that. But version 2 was out for ages. The point I was trying to make was that just because the major version isn't incrementing, doesn't mean further changes wo...

Re: When

When will Linux kernel 4.0 be out? They've got thousands of developers and nothing's happening! Version 3 has been out for ages! :? ;)

PS. phpBB 3.1 and 3.2 will have loads of new features. phpBB4 is probably ages away, so don't keep your hopes up.

Re: phpBB vs. vBulletin

i've checked it out because i thought that it would be nice to not have to mod to get nice seo friendly urls.. but then it just seems so foreign and non-friendly (which is probably a purely emotional reaction) but i don't think VB is for me.. money issue notwithstanding. also, there is that thing a...

Re: FBI wants phpBB to have a backdoor

Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) passed through without anyone noticing it. That's not true. CISPA gained interest before the House of Representatives voted on it. Also, it has yet to pass the Senate, and even if it does, President Obama has said he will veto the bill. While th...

Actually it's probably a per-category basis, like Websense. I should note that such web filters are rarely accurate though.

Nothing. As long as they're continuing to make money then privacy will be ignored. Sad, but true.
