Re: Spiders & bots to add to phpBB

Does this manage bot code ban spammers as well or should I do that manually some how? Adding spambots to the bot listing doesn't do anything except provide a more bot-friendly version of the page. So it does not ban spambots. Usually spambots don't use specific user-agents anyway; they rotate betwe...

Re: phpBB and the EU cookie law - the cookie opt-in regulati

Now perhaps a hybrid could be devised, where cookies are tagged "essential" and "optional". Essential cookies get written automatically and optional cookies get a prompt (allow once, allow always, disallow). Actually, I was thinking of something different. Guests only require co...

Re: The Best Thing that phpBB Can Do: Merge

It can't be because they have listened to a few people with tinfoil-hat tendencies who are scared to look at an unfamiliar site if it contains javascript.....or can it? Security is not the only reason for disabling JavaScript. You will find that I'm also an accessibility advocate. I don't believe I...

SEO is a scam. Stick to web standards, produce relevant content. Enough said.

Re: Cookies

I'm not a lawyer either, but I wouldn't think being open source would meet the spirit (or perhaps even the letter) of the law. Yeah, actually I have no idea. ;) But being open source would help, no doubt about that. It's a lot more difficult to discover how companies like Facebook, or other compani...

Re: New bie : Need help regarding hosting phpbb on IIs 6.0

First of all, you need to get PHP working with IIS. This site might help: php.iis.net . You might also want to do a web search for: IIS site:phpbb.com . To test if it works, create a .php file in the root called phpinfo.php with the following: <?php phpinfo(); . Then visit that page and see if it co...

Re: Reducing your images

Depends on the type of image, and how much quality you're willing to lose. For simple images, always use PNG. Using GIMP you can reduce it to "indexed mode" (256 colour - or less if that's feasible). For greyscale images, it makes sense to change to greyscale mode instead of RGB. This will...

phpBB is licensed under the GPLv2, so there's nothing stopping someone from doing that.

Re: Banning proxies

Does this thus mean that if I put this code: # block proxy servers from site access # http://perishablepress.com/press/2008/04/20/how-to-block-proxy-servers-via-htaccess/ RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP:VIA} !^$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP:FORWARDED} !^$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP:USERAGENT_VIA} !^$ [...

Re: The Best Thing that phpBB Can Do: Merge

PS. Top notch security is a great goal worth pursuing. But it should not come at the expense of all else. Eventually there's got to be some compromise where people say that the value of that high security does not outweigh the value of this, that, or the other (whatever else may be of value to them...

Re: The Best Thing that phpBB Can Do: Merge

It should be mentioned that there would be a number of incompatibilities when merging with another project: Differences in ideas, different features, etc. Different licensing. phpBB3 is licensed under the GPLv2. MyBB is licensed under the LGPLv3. SMF is licensed under a BSD-style license. All of the...

What version of your style are you using? Go to the styles tab, and check in Templates and Themes (off the top of my head) and check the version.

Also, please provide us with the information necessary to assist you by filling out the Support Request Template.

Disable setting of cookies for attachments, when serving them -- so CDNs work (better)? Cookies must be required for attachments since permissions are used to control who can see the attachment. The need to authenticate (if authentication is even required for attachments -- on our site it is not) e...

Are they genuinely from phpBB or as I suspect someone trying to drum up business? Just curious as I do need some work doing and finding it hard to recommondation of who can be trusted. Not official here, but I'm fairly certain that's not from phpBB. Emails from phpBB will be from a phpbb.com addres...
