Re: [3.0.x] Tweaks for large forums

actually, a much more crude way (with some approximations) might work even better: add two columns to user table: one with the string which this process produces, and another one with the post-count for this user when the string was created. use some heuristics for when to recalc (say, if post-count...

Re: Image resize, the easiest way!!

PS2 I put 700px and it works well enough. But it resize the LOGO too !!?? ......... yes, setting "img" in the css would limit the width of *any* image in your site. using 100% means "the size of the containing element". some people prefer to leave small margins/padding/whatever around images, so th...

Re: Image resize, the easiest way!!

this is of course possible, but i have two small suggestion: for width, do not use hardcoded 800px. instead use 100%. no need to limit height. personally, instead of creating alternative bbcode and all the grief it can give you (e.g., it does not fix the problem for existing posts, nor does it preve...

Re: How to Share Avatars on Multiple Boards?

in your acp there is a place to define path of avatars. you could either use relative path or symbolic links such that both paths will lead to the same directory. "both paths" - i.e. the path from forum A and the path from forum B. (personally i like symbolic links better. you ptobably need ssh to ...

Re: How to Share Avatars on Multiple Boards?

if it's the same server then i presume it is possible. in your acp there is a place to define path of avatars. you could either use relative path or symbolic links such that both paths will lead to the same directory. from your question i assume you already solved the problem of "how to have the sam...

Re: Phpbb or Vbulletin

If it is a vanilla (means, no changes on anything) you don't need the automagic updater. Just throw the changed files package and run db update from install/ oh, that was what i thought. for a moment there i was hoping there was some real "few clicks upgrade" that i managed to miss. to clarify my p...

i agree with what you say in the rest of the post, but pray tell: how do you do it, even on a vanilla board, "with a few mouse clicks"?

i would like to learn this neat trick.
thanks.

Re: Phpbb or Vbulletin

.... they say you can update Vbulletin with the click of a mouse phpBB Can as well. well.... you have to use a very radical definition of "a click of a mouse" to say that. i would never dream of using a proprietary package like vb when a better, open source one like phpbb is available, but we shoul...

Re: WEBSITE IP

Although, if you get a dedicated IP address from a U.S. company, nothing prevents you from locating that server in some other country, right? wrong. Dog Cow's explanation is precise: you'll have to open your own company[1] and apply for a netblock (good luck with that). if this is just chit-chat, n...

Nice, I love that, indeed. And yes, you need a MOD.. :) i do not believe this is the case. You don't "believe" that it's the case? You mean that my post (with linked examples) about custom BBCodes 15+ hours before yours wasn't convincing? Steve it's a simple matter of reading comprehension. "...

Re: Text next to a jpeg letter

Nice, I love that, indeed. And yes, you need a MOD.. :) i do not believe this is the case. i definitely remember seeing a "float" bbcode, which i believe should handle this. of course, if i am wrong, it won't be the first nor the last time... so my advise: look here of on the web for "float" bbcode...

Re: Different users, Different Browsers in Same PC

you can also use "private browsing" (supportd by ff, chrome, safari, and ie-8 at least - not sure about the others). i'm pretty sure that if you use "private browsing", each browser window can be logged in as a different user without interference between them. of course, the proof of the pudding and...

this is an old subject, but it was raised again on some other board, so i thought i'll add my thoughts here. since Marshalrusty's response at the beginning of this thread seems to summarize the team's attitude, i write my post as a dialog with his answer. twisi, phpbb asks for a very modest "payment...

Re: How hard would it be to share User DB across domains?

Hi arod-1, Thanks for the great tip. Quick question, when you say: do this only on the installation that uses 'prefix_1_'. ... do you mean, "prefix_2_"? caught in the act... this is (one of the reasons) why i have the sig. It seems to me that this procedure would work with any new board created tha...
