Run phpBB2 off a phpBB 1.4.4 database?

Simple question. Can I install phpBB2 in a separate directory from my phpBB 1.4.4 directory and point phpBB2 to the exisiting (production) database? :o Or is the phpBB2 database structure so different that it wouldn't allow this? If this is possible, is it recommended?
