Re: Facebook groups major competitor to forums!

Just sync your forum with the relevant Facebook group (similar to Newssync for USENET) and then problem solved.

No - never!

Also watch out for sites like askives, mywhatis, etc. where your content ends up showing if not careful.

Re: Looking for logs from busy server for testing purposes

I think I remember a free mod that was out there a couple years ago that did exactly this. Emulated board traffic with allowed inputs for online users, bot traffic, etc.

Effects on limiting sessions for Google, Bing, etc

A couple of questions on limiting guest (or bot's such as Google or Bing which without session limiting could create 100's or more simultaneous sessions) 1. Do you feel that limiting sessions can have any negative effect of crawling by Search Engines such as Google or Bing? 2 Do you feel that by lim...

Or even something that will auto move topics into different areas if it in the wrong place

Re: [3.0.x] Tweaks for large forums

Do you really need it? There are so many misc things included in PHPBB3 and PHPBB2 - many which are unnecessary and nothing but bloat. If you don't need it, then strip it. Your hardware, software and most importantly - your member's will thank you. Best way to decide. Take your usage trends for a lo...

Re: Our forums are slow

Most of us have no experience in analyzing the performance of a board we cannot see. That is why I offered access if it was needed ;). I didn't know if there were some standard things to check like JLA mentioned. Now, unfortunately, I don't have access to this server as it is hosted by our client. ...

Re: Our forums are slow

There could be alot of reasons why your forums are slow. 1st, you need to take a look at your webserver, php and mysql configurations and be sure you are using best practices for each. This will help you out tremendously. The hardware you are running on shouldn't be so much of a concern as long as y...

Re: Root Path on Windows Installation

We have resolved the issue for PHPBB2. The problem lies in the $phpbb_root_path being set as "./" PHP 4 ( php4 ) on Windows apparently doesn't have a problem with this but when you switch to PHP5 ( php 5 ) and are running a Windows Server 2003 or above box with II6 (and maybe IIS7) with FastCGI, you...

Ok, but with PHP5, why does the phpbb root path at ./ not work anymore. Works fine in PHP4
