Re: Very slow searches for simple words

But 25 seconds for a search? Is it normal for some phpBB search to be that slow? It's not just "apple" as that was just an example. I could come up with some other slow searches, and sometimes they are so slow that they just time out. A search for "optimization" comes back rather quickly and has 29 ...

Re: Very slow searches for simple words

Did you try the MySQL Fulltext for the "Search backend". Yes, tried that and just tried again (and I did rebuild the MySQL Fulltext index before searching). A search for "apple" took about 26 seconds. The index rebuild took less time than the search for "apple". The rebuild took about 6 seconds wit...

Very slow searches for simple words

I'm running phpBB 3.2.2 with PHP 7.1.15, mysqli (MariaDB), (FPM/FastCGI) and phpBB Native Fulltext search backend. Searching for something like "apple" can take around 25 seconds which seems rather ridiculous. I don't seem to have performance issues with anything else on the server and other forum p...

Re: Discuss: phpBB 3.2.1 released

Everything went well but these is a tiny cosmetic issue. The forum_read.gif (and other icons) on the index page are enlarged and therefore blurry. I'm using Firefox 54.0.1. This is a feature to fix rendering errors/blurriness on high-DPI displays. It is because your browser is caching the older, lo...

Re: Slow searches on new Linode machine

Well I upgraded to the latest version of Apache, PHP 7.1.7 and MariaDB, switched to using Apache's event model and php-fpm, reworked some Apache configuration settings, and still the search can be ridiculously slow on some (not all) searches. When running a slow search, a php-fpm process goes 100% C...

Re: Slow searches on new Linode machine

Enable it in the config.php file, will display info in footer. I uncommented the 'DEBUG' line in config.php and performed the search for 'apple'. Took about 24 seconds. I clicked on the 'SQL Explain' link and got this page: https://www.htmlvalidator.com/temp/SQL%20Report.html So... if I'm reading t...

Re: Slow searches on new Linode machine

Because it searches more as just the forum :). The normal search still exists, however it is using sphinx, so you can't compare it with the stock search method. Maybe they don't use the stock search method because it can be slow? You should enable show query times on your board to see where the bot...

I don't think its phpbb that's the problem as mine is pretty much instant!
Have you tried various terms? Mine is fast on certain terms especially if there are no matches... but on other terms that generate a few (say around 35) matches, it can take over 20 seconds.

Re: Slow searches on new Linode machine

Well I tried some things and no lock. A simple search for "apple" still takes about 24 seconds. Now here's an interesting question... why does this phpBB support forum use Google to power the search results instead of the normal phpBB search functionality? Is it because search is slow and inefficien...

Re: Slow searches on new Linode machine

Tweak apache and mysql etc but if you have already done that and performance is good the change the search database and see if that helps Performance seems fine except for certain searches. I tried "MySQL Fulltext" and "phpBB Native Fulltext" and they were about the same. It took 24 seconds for a s...

Under the Resources Tab on Linode, there is a Documentation area. Make sure you've optimized MySQL. I believe there is a doc on there for that. Probably will need to tweak some config files to make it run the way you want.
Thanks. I'll take a look.

Interesting.... but I wonder if that is still the case? I'm sure a lot has changed in 7 years. Does anyone know what the "official" best "Search backend" is for phpBB 3.2.0 and PHP7?

Re: Slow searches on new Linode machine

When I say setup I'm talking how the server is setup if it's not optimised then it can be slow Can you be more specific about these "optimizations"? Or point me to a good link about them? As far as I know it's already "optimized" enough (as in there is nothing I could do that I know of that would s...
