I am curious in regards to a benchmarking issue. For each bogus account a spammer makes on average (assuming no message posts). How many characters does this roughly inflate the sql backup file?

One other issue too, is with all these bloated (fake) accounts, isnt that going to add more strain on the database?

I'm back. Ran some tests. Some usernames in the user list got indexed by google, others did not. I assume the latter had already been flagged by google as spammers, and hence dropped out of the public index? I do have question about the current robots.txt file. Since these files listed in disallow a...

Thanks I will try to implement this one today. But isn't there also a big downside to robots.txt? It seems that people use this to often hide SENSITIVE or PRIVATE information from the bots. But a smart hacker or spamer will most likely specificaly target the robots.txt so now they know EXACTLY what ...

From now on, the only spam posts I leave on my forum, are those posted by anti-spammers, regarding e-mails of real spammers. Why not fight fire with fire? :P I am getting a lot more pro-active against spamming though than i have before. It's just getting rediculous now. I imagine it will continue to...

Ok I'm going to try and do some tests on this later on today. I also imagine if you have too many spam bots in the user listings, this may make search engines put a negative rating on your site... as they will assume it is affiliated with the spamers in some way.

You guys have me wondering. I have a problem with spam bots that make accounts just to spam a site in their registration listing. You know, the web page that a person can click on to SHOW registered users... Could I just add that page to the robots.txt file and then be happy knowing that any spam ur...

A good spell checker?

I would like to supply the users on my form a spell checker. I did a search on the forums here and I found one that supposedly worked well, but would give users a bit of adds/spam which is someting i'd rather not send to my users.

Would like some suggestions from the pros.

Ahah! So that's the trick. Anyway I just took a look now, had more than one new spam account made ( I think), but something else a bit weird. I suddenly have a spammer, posting an anti-spam targeting campaign? If this is a bot it not only registered an account, then clicked on the active registratio...

Aren't spam bots great?

I don't know. Except a huge increase over the last two years with spam bots registering to phpbb. I recently disabled guest accounts, so now you have to register, and then click on a link in the email to set up an account. Yet I STILL get bogus names registering. Most of these bots don't even bother...

I am going to bump this one up to the top. I did a search on this forum and it looks like what I had in mind but... <!--#include virtual="/navbar.txt"--> Does not seem to work in the header. Could it be this file does not support includes? I had this working once years ago, but now can't remember ho...

How did he exploit this?

I was running 2.0.2. I like to follow the safe saying, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Problem is someone altered some things in my forum and I was told it was done through exploits and to change to the latest version. So tonight I went and deleted EVERYTHING. Did a fresh install, I even threw out a...
